Strangely enough, I didn't have to Wiki or Google that word.

Merkin -- a pubic hair wig worn by prostitutes or a mop used for cleaning cannons.

"Clean your cannon, big boy?"

(hoping that this isn't graphic enough that Rob feels a need to remove it -- but I'd understand if he did)

Merkin - I thought that was redneck as in "Us merkins need to just kick us some booty".

Ha!
Yep.
You got it.

Forgive me, but now you too, along with millions of others across the globe will sit in rapt attention, glued to the tube, totally engrossed, each and every time our esteemed president is about to give a speech. Waiting, waiting, on pins and needles, for that flash of deja vu -- will he? or won't he? -- pronounce yet again "I'm proud to be a merkin!"

RE: The 7 Deadly (amriacan) SINS - malolo - 11-27-2007

A friend sent me a well-written/extremely-sad article today that some among you may find interesting -- wasn't sure if I should post it here or down in the VA-thread from a couple weeks back.

120 War Vets Commit Suicide Each Week

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/112607B.shtml

I was particularly struck by this bit:

"There is something so smugly superior in the way we talk about suicide bombers and the cultures that produce them. But here is an unsettling thought. In 2005, 6,256 American veterans took their own lives. That same year, there were about 130 documented deaths of suicide bombers in Iraq. Do the math. That's a ratio of 50-to-1. So who is it that is most effectively creating a culture of suicide and martyrdom? If George Bush is right, that it is despair, neglect and poverty that drive people to such acts, then isn't it worth pointing out that we are doing a far better job?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sad, yah? So, to help a wee bit in the prevention of more of the same, here's a relevant link to take a look at, and then pass on perhaps to those in our area who may be in need of assistance:
The National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
And you were expecting some fan mail from some flounder? Of course it's me. Even though this threat got "a few" people up set, (w/me seemes to be the same ones) it doesn't provoke thought.
As well as jib jab banter by those that may feel more effected or guilty of our "family values".
AN esuse me, no body said St. Peter wasn't guilty of every one himself. And for myself, personal Peter is guilty of 3. and 4 sometimes.
I admit when I turn my truck on it returns the favor.
Now I'm gonna go out on a limb here.
I'd like to see if anyone can connect more
parallels with "modern life' and the way we justify or sinning.
Try this, lightheartedly, like "we" are laughing at outselves. THINK
The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.
We drink to o much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete...
Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.
Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.
Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.
Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.
Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.
Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
Yeah, it's lovely really.
Heaps of truths.
Heaps to think about.
Heaps of things to put into action.
It's been bouncing around the net for a number of years, but a good reminder and worth the read nonetheless.
(Funny, it's been credited to a kid who witnessed the Columbine shootings, it's been credited to George Carlin, and it's been credited (as in the URL you posted Carrie) to good ol' Anonymous. Truth of the matter, according to the snopes.com site (among others) is that it was written by the pastor of a non-denominational megachurch who ended up stepping down amid allegations of sexual misconduct. Talk about a paradox!)
Anyhow.
Thanks Peter.
And Carrie, too.
What a difference a sad event in someone's life makes.
GEORGE CARLIN (His wife recently died...)
Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent...and so very appropriate.
RE: The 7 Deadly (amriacan) SINS - Kapohocat - 12-05-2007
What happened to laughter as the best medicine?
So we get a little silly. I dont really think many people think that people don't take the facts seriously. Just for second try to believe that every one does the best they can, and then some, to make the lives around them happier and better.
Here is an example: a fairly well known guy in Hilo had a heart attack last year, not fatal but close, when I went to visit him two days later, he told me that his wife was so embarrassed! Why? Because his doctor told him that impotence could go along with heart troubles. He said his beautiful wife who is also over 60 walked in and he said "Look honey, it still works" lifting up the covers... not knowing that a nurse was right behind his wife...
The point is that he made me laugh so hard at the story, while I was on the verge of tears because he was a good friend.
I say do what you can, and then laugh.
