Sounds hit or miss ...
I have given up on eating Italian food out since moving here.
I miss Il Porcini in Montclair in the East Bay (California) opened by two brothers from the old country. And Caffe Venezia! And several other fine Italian places in the area, without even crossing the bridge.
Here it is a wasteland. I have yet to try Paolo's because I live north of Hilo and don't want to drive back from Pahoa after dinner, but if John Rabi says he is so good I believe him!

I brought many many cans of San Marzano Tomatoes and I am making a big pot of red sauce with turkey Italain Sausage for dinner tonight. Wish I had known earlier and I would have invited you for dinner! I also am importing a good supply of pasta flours, olive oil and olives. I am building a wood burning oven for pizza and breads. I went to cooking school in Leece (Puglia), Italy. Paolo's is fairly good, but I would not call it AWESOME. We have only been there three times. Gotta go stir the pot!

I just heard today that they (Pahoa Village Cafe) took over Shaka's storefront. ??? This was from the guy that sold the Paradise Cafe 9 months ago (it was just sold again and is to be made into a full fledged steak house!), he now runs a little hot dog and hamburger stand at the Hilo Farmer's Market, advertised as "The WORLD'S Best Cheeseburger" I have to say, it was a damn good cheese burger and an interesting chat.

He bakes his own bread, he makes his own pasta and makes his sauce from scratch. I have eaten at Italian restaurants all over the USA as well as in Italy. He would make it anywhere IMHO. Maybe not awesome, but certainly very good.

My understanding is that the Pahoa Village Cafe is now operating in the former Shaka's site (with a full liquor license) as well as having the same menu at the former Verna's in Kalapana (but no booze).
Unfortunately, neither place accommodates vegans. My dearly beloved has been a vegetarian since he was 16 and then about 12 years ago realized he had an allergy to dairy products, so now he eats a very little fish but no meat or dairy products. This means that we only eat at places that have at least one meat and dairy free dish, or something that can be adapted easily. It's a shame more restaurants don't make a point of having a full spectrum menu that includes a meat and dairy free entree, because being able to accommodate everybody increases your customer base, and even omnivores such as myself will eat a vegan dish if it is well done. We end up eating a lot of Thai and Japanese food because they can meet everyone's needs. I know that people who try to be Kosher, even if not following the strict orthodox rules prefer vegan dishes too.
Kani-Lehua, thanks for the links, but both places are no longer in operation. I think Hilo can't support a strictly vegan restaurant, but it would be nice if more places had at least one such dish on the menu!

Pahoa Village Cafe is once again alive and well and operating out of what was once Shaka's. We were just in town tonight (ate at Luquin's) and saw quite a few tables occupied at the Pahoa Village Cafe. They also operate down in Kalapana at Verna's. It is nice to have another choice in Pahoa....but tonight I just HAD to have nachos and margaritas at Luquin's.

There's a new bakery that just opened in the Pahoa Marketplace, where the pizza place used to be. They are trying out different items but the pastries are homemade, they bake bread and serve plate lunches and burgers. Also do custom cakes. Really nice folks, I wish them the best and hope the community supports them.
