RE: Is small farming profitable? - asly - 05-22-2009 That would be great Devany if you can email me the article. Thanks! And then, I dreamt of Hawaii... http://crazypineappledream.blogspot.com/ RE: Is small farming profitable? - mdd7000 - 05-25-2009 Have you talked to any of the area restaurants/chefs to see what types of locally grown veggies, etc. that they might want? That could be a way for you to more quickly get a profit out of the operation. RE: Is small farming profitable? - mella l - 05-25-2009 Mella's fifth post today!LOL Recently in the Hana Hou airline magazine there was a very interesting article on the new art and science of growing mushrooms. The article was fascinating as the mushrooms were grown in hanging bags and on a rail like system (sort of like the old dry cleaners shops), drip irrigation into the sack, kept in dark for 60 days and them rotated out into a more sunlit area for finish growing and maturing. Although state of the art system, it was sleek clean, not too expensive and the mushrooms get high dollar from restaurants around the world. Light weight product so air shipping would be reasonable. Looked workable to me, but I'm an arm chair gardner here, ornamentals only! Link to article hope your enjoy it also. I am in love with Lavender. The Maui company makes some wonderful bath products for sure. I had lavender chocolate when I lived in Arizona. It was at Whole Foods. Yummy.[:X] Carrie Rojo http://www.carrierojo.etsy.com "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. I got a few starts of lavender from Waimea last weekend, we will see if they will thrive at the farm. If they do, I'll put in a lot of lavender and see about honey made from lavender nectar. We did catch a swarm of bees the day before yesterday, so tomorrow I'm going out to the farm to set up a bee site so the hive can be relocated when my friend with a truck gets back from Southpoint on Thursday night. Somehow driving a hive of bees around in the van with me just doesn't quite seem the thing. Guess I'll need a small trailer to move hives on. Kurt Wilson RE: Is small farming profitable? - Devany - 05-27-2009 Mella, since you can get to a Whole Foods... try one of the Bacon Chocolate Bars... OMG Aloha au i Hawai`i, devany www.myhawaiianhome.blogspot.com www.eastbaypotters.blogspot.com RE: Is small farming profitable? - Hotzcatz - 05-30-2009 Bacon Chocolate bars? We do get pigs and we can grow cacoa, but "Bacon Chocolate"? It sounds so totally "eewe!" Kurt Wilson RE: Is small farming profitable? - asly - 06-01-2009 When baking with chocolate and lavender, I infuse heavy cream or 1/2 and 1/2 with lavender and them mix it with the choc - heavenly! Same concept as the infusted honey, you heat up the cream until hot, stir in about 1-2 teaspoons of lavender, take off heat, set aside and let steep until cool, then strain out the buds. This is super yummy in hot chocolate drinks and in chocolate mochas. Yes!!! grow lavender!!! best to you, Ann And then, I dreamt of Hawaii... http://crazypineappledream.blogspot.com/ RE: Is small farming profitable? - Blakeyboy1 - 06-01-2009 Hey Devany I have seen the bacon chocolate bar you mention at the Whole Foods we shop at. I guess I will have to try it! And for those of you familiar with Mexican food at all, moles (mo-lay) is the sauce used on many dishes and generally contains chocolate. Ann - how is that pineapple coming along? -Blake http://www.theboysgreatescape.blogspot.com/ RE: Is small farming profitable? - asly - 06-02-2009 Blake - I will take a pic of the pineapple and put it on my blog sometime next week. One word will describe it. And then, I dreamt of Hawaii... http://crazypineappledream.blogspot.com/ |
