What I don’t like
1. Fake Aloha – I can’t think of a more overused, outdated, and inapplicable word to describe the attitude/lifestyle in Hawaii. Worse yet, the Hawaii- born (not ethnic Hawaiians) are chronic offenders of the concept. Some of the rudest and most unfriendly people I have met were in Puna and Hilo. (Kona is friendlier). I feel safer in Oakland than in some parts of Puna. Some of the locals are vile and animalistic in their behavior and treatment towards each other let alone outsiders.

5. Heat – summers are miserable in Puna, December – April not so bad

8. No air conditioners – come on it’s freakin’ hot, get some cool breeze coming in. Ohhh, I forgot energy is double the price on the Big Island vs. the mainland.

I find it interesting that someone was motivated to dig so deep into the archives to pull up a months old thread, just so they could list what they don't like about a place where they don't live, have never lived, and don't plan to live.

Trolls clearly don't just live under bridges.

Dear Arrow76,

I find the Bay Area a very respectable place to live. Hey, that reminds me of a song by my favorite group!:

ell now we're respected in society
We don't worry about the things that we used to be
We're talking heroin with the president
Well it's a problem, sir, but it can be fixed
Uh yes!

Well now you're a pillar of society
You don't worry about the things that you used to be
You're a rag-trade girl, you're the queen of porn
You're the easiest lay on the White House lawn
Get out of my life, don't come back
Get out of my life, don't come back

She's so respectable
She's so respectable
She's so delectable
She's so respectable
Get out of my life
Don't take my wife
Don't come back
Get out of my life
Don't take my wife
Don't come back
What I say!

She's so respectable
She's so respectable
She's so respectable
She's so respectable
Get out of my life
Don't take my wife
Don't come back
Oh get out of my life
Don't take my wife
Don't come back

She's so respectable
She's so respectable
She's so delectable
She's so respectable
Get out of my life
Don't take my wife
Don't come back...woo!
Get out of life
Don't take my wife
Don't come back
Get out of my life
Don't take my wife
Don't come back, come back, hey

Just to clear up a glaring misconception (error, whateva) posted by Arrow... The "desert climate" IS NOT CAUSED BY ACID RAIN....

The leeward Kohalas (Kawaihae area), and the mountain top areas of Mauna Loa & Mauna Kea have annual rainfall of less than 10"/year, which puts it squarely in the "desert climate" definition based on rainfall...

There is enough info on the climate zones of Hawaii on the web, and many true experts on deserts of all types, at UHH and on the web... too bad some do not know how to fact check.... I would suggest checking either NOAA or UH website resources for the maps, or checking out a copy of the Atlas of Hawaii.....

Where to begin with the misconceptions and out right false statements and jaundiced opinions. Nowhere. Ridicule is best! Oh, I got cut on the lava -- I'm never coming back.

To which I say, thank you and aloha for good!

With an attitude like his, I'm absolutely shocked that he finds Punatics rude and unfriendly. Hey Arrow, do us and your family a favor and skip your next visit...

I am somewhat taken aback by the responses I have received here. I set out to give an honest assessment for those considering moving to Puna. I believed that some of the prior posters were being overly cheery and idealistic about Puna. I felt my post would better prepare a potential transplant to the realities they would likely face. As previously stated I have many family members in Puna and I have spent months living there during visits over the years. It is true that I much would much rather live in the Bay Area than Puna, but to call my opinions “jaundiced” is laughable. There is not an ounce of envy, life is great in the Bay Area. I do miss my family, but they have lived there for many years, and like many of you, some are happy living there, however others are not and live there due to necessity. My opinions are for someone moving there from California from which many new “Punatics” migrate. I am not a “Troll,” I have been to Puna several times and many of you did not question the truths of my posts only that you did not like what I stated. To those that did: Yes, there are parts of Puna that are scarier than Oakland; parts of Nanawale come to mind. Another area of dispute was the deserts being mostly caused by acid rain. Please check the web, here is statement from the Geological Society of America,
“The Kaû desert (the main “desert”) is not a true desert in that rainfall exceeds 1,000 millimetres (39 in) per year. However, rain combines with sulfur dioxide, released by volcanic vents, and forms acid rain. The pH of the rain, as low as 3.4 during an eruption, inhibits plant growth.”
I am not surprised that a few find Puna enjoyable and a great place. There are also some who swear that life can get no better than living in sub-Saharan Africa. My post is for the overwhelming majority whom I believe would not want to live Puna. I estimate that substantially less than 1 in 10 people who visit Puna actually would be willing to live there. The many of you who don’t like my post should be pleased, I’m helping keep people out of Puna so you can keep it just the way it is.

Here are some responses to specific posts
808blogger – You got me. Yes, I think Kona is nicer.
TonyB – Don’t feel sorry for me, I don’t live in Puna.
Csgray – There are active posts here dating back a number of years. I didn’t have to dig hard for this one since it is only a few months old.
Glen – It does suck getting cut on lava rock! Many locals would agree. However, It has never enter my mind never to come back. I love my family and they all live there, so see you in July.
Davinci – I said “some” of the rudest and unfriendliest people I met were in Puna. I’m challenging the Aloha concept in Puna, which I feel is sadly lacking . There are some real jerks in Bay Area too, but there is also no claim of Aloha.
