RE: Introduce yourself - granettranch - 11-16-2012 Aloha, My name is John. My wife, two young daughters, and I live in a small town about 50 miles north of Phoenix, Arizona. We recently purchased an acre lot w/ a small house on Ahi Street in Eden Roc for around 7,500 dollars. Bought the property from a friend of a friend and thought it was a deal that we couldn't pass up. Never been to hawaii but we have spent alot of time in Costa Rica and we love the tropics. We don't feel that Costa Rica would be the best place to raise two girls so for us Hawaii is interesting.... My wife is a school psychologist with Doctorate in Child Psychology and is wondering if there are many jobs on the big island in her profession? I have a few years left until I hit 20 with my job and can pull my first pension, (My understanding is Hawaii doesn't tax government pensions?) I would like to find a job as a game warden or the big island equivalent. We are serious about moving to the big island and are planning our first visit in june for a few weeks. The summers here are getting hotter and and hotter and the school system here is one of the worst in the country. Looking forward to our visit. John RE: Introduce yourself - nana valley - 11-18-2012 grannettranch, congrats on such a bargain lot. About your young children, please research the forum on public education, private schools and their costs. Try to make wise consideration about moving them here to the Big Island in the Puna district at a young age. Do some research!! RE: Introduce yourself - csgray - 11-18-2012 I have had many, many students over the last 7 years whose parents raised them in Eden Rock with no more mishaps than any kid can find anywhere. It is far from everything and everywhere, like most Puna subdivisions, and sparsely populated, so many parents spend a lot of time driving their kids to activities and friends' houses. Carol RE: Introduce yourself - Anna - 11-18-2012 Looks like it's gone "off topic". I'm "Anna" - lived on Big Island in Hawaiian Acres then Seaview Estates for 5.5 + years until moving back to the MidWest to take care of family issues... Miss it and remember it like it was Today... Hawaii's Big Island is an amazing place not to be dismissed....powerful, beautiful, memorable and soulful - in fact, it "embeds" - into the soul, not to be forgotten....becomes a part of us. I will return in February for my son's wedding. Can't wait. Aloha, Anna http://sudnlyaware.wordpress.com RE: Introduce yourself - MMJcareer - 12-04-2012 Aloha all, I'm Derek... lived here for 16 months now in Kona. Looking to move to the Puna area for the MMJ. Great website/resource. Anyone looking for a wwoofer/work exchanger, just email me. I was a pilot in the Air Force, now I'm just looking to become a farmer. Aloha. RE: Introduce yourself - OverOahu - 12-08-2012 My name is Kevin and My wife Ghen and I would like to relocate next year to BI. Been for vacation, and like it ALOT more than Oahu. We are in our mid-late 20's and always looking for new friends. She works in retail and can transfer to Hilo, and I do a couple different things ![]() Hopefully buying some land soon, and can start coming over more regularly! Im from mainland, and she is from the Philippines (near another beautiful volcano strangely enough). Will look forward to chatting with you guys soon! Aloha! RE: Introduce yourself - tweez - 07-03-2013 Aloha! I'm Teresa (or T or tweez). Currently live in Austin, TX but plan to move to the east side (pref. Puna district). Unfortunately the plan is a long one (about 5 years out) but we hope to visit as much as possible between now and then. Our next trip is already booked for February (Kapoho) and I can't wait! We had the opportunity to visit BI last October and again this past February and it was absolutely love at first visit. In all our travels I have never been somewhere where I felt so much at home and could actually see myself living. A little about us – we are mid/late-30s with no kids so no worries about schools. I have already learned so much from the web forums, I really appreciate everyone's helpfulness and candor. A lot of what I have learned has contributed to our timeline. The job market is so significantly different that we want to make sure we make all necessary preparations to be able to contribute well to both the community and economy and, while we both work predominantly from home, I travel enough that a straight move is not feasible. For some reason, the powers that be don’t want to double/triple my travel budget! I am excited to continue to learn and explore so I will use the search function religiously. If I am redundant in any questions I may ask, I apologize in advance! Mahalo, tweez RE: Introduce yourself - Kane family - 07-04-2013 Aloha everyone! My husband and I fell in love with the beauty of the islands two years ago, but even more- in love with the whole island philosophy... living for family, finding the good and positive, not allowing anger to take root....celebrating life and the people in it. (I hope this is true island spirit!! ) We have been thru so much as a family, and we are really -really - wanting to raise our two youngest with the same family oriented/living-to-live ideals that we have come to cherish. Soooo.... we don't fit in with the Haole's anymore here in Minnesota, eh?!!! lol! Husband finally made the decision to take early retirement, and we are looking at a relo to the Puna area... We want solitude, peace, native landscape, and maybe run into town every couple of weeks when we are out of supplies. Other than that, we plan to focus on our kids, home-school, teach ecology and life skills to them... and farm!
RE: Introduce yourself - PaulW - 07-04-2013 tweez and Kanes: Welcome to Puna! It's a fantastic place, I hope you'll be happy here. RE: Introduce yourself - Picturepager - 08-13-2013 Aloha Punatics! I fell in love with Puna, most specifically the Waa Waa area about 3 years ago while living in an EcoVillage nearby. I lived in Hilo before that but it is Puna that still calls me. I'm Stateside now, and I've been looking to move back to Puna either full or part time but have had to put that on hold while figuring out the best path for me to do so as well as figuring out financially how I will be able to do so. I'm a female Photographer in my 30's. I'd found a property listed in Waa Waa that felt perfect in every way but I wanted to see it in person before moving forward, and it sold while I was thinking about it, so I'm still looking for that perfect spot. Ideally, I'd love to find something around 3 acres of land with pre-established fruit trees if possible. I figure I could potentially live in a temporary structure on the land while building or in a local EcoVillage. I love the practice of water catchment, growing food organically, and living off-grid with solar power. I also love the kindness and respect towards others that can be lacking in some Communities Stateside (i.e. NYC where I lived for 20 years). I dreamed about Puna as recently as last night. It calls my Soul. I've been reading Punatalk for at least a year or longer, in order to keep in touch with the Community I hope to once again be a part of. I'm so glad this forum exists. It's a pleasure to know you all. Thank you for having me here. Mahalo. Much Love, Laura |
