seems pretty reckless to base all the testing based on if people had traveled to china. since this has person to person spread it would make more sense to close the schools instead of waiting to see what happens.

To be fair, it's a tricky decision as an extended school closing forces hundreds or thousands of families to find child care, possibly skip work, etc... Tbere are also academic schedules, required testing, graduation, etc to consider. On what basis do you make that call when there are no (confirmed) cases?
If the justification is simply to prevent possible person to person infection, then we should also be suspending flights with Japan & California, closing malls, movie theaters, sporting events, etc. All this without a single (confirmed) case? Not happening (yet).

I went to Costco today and I don't think it has been that busy even at Christmas time. Not a single parking spot to be found.

I did not insist on anything...I mistakenly included China in the travel ban issued by President Trump on Jan 31, 2020 and I corrected that post...Point being, the President took action...

That's good, as the whole Trump thing isn't really Hawaii related (as locally required) and probably had something to do with Rob again threatening to lock up this discussion. Glad it wasn't you breaking Punaweb rules to push your partisan sentiments to the detriment of everyone else sharing information.

Well, as already discussed, Hawaii dems Schatz, Hirono & Green have been working with the CDC to get test kits, or have them sign off on using external kits, and Gabbard has called for suspending flights to Japan and Korea. I know this doesn't protect us from the darkest corners of Africa like other "raciest" actions, but guess we'll just have to forgive their lack of focus on the real issue?

I found some of it at least a bit funny, so I guess opinions vary? (But then again I'm "omnipotent" so it must be funny, by definition and your own admission, sorry. I'm still working on making that malasada that's too hot for even me to hold though...)
No hard feelings Frank - remember laughter is the best medicine and we're going to have to entertain and medicate ourselves for now (as China isn't currently making medicines for us, there are heightened travel restrictions affecting Hawaii, and there's no vaccine coming in a "fairly quick manner")

There is a lot of useful information on this thread, as well as the occasional non-Hawaii comment. May I suggest when it goes off the beaten track that you provide temporary quarantine for the one or two intractable tangential posters, rather than penalize everyone? There have been a great number of posts from ironyak* and others with information and links about COVID-19 that I might not otherwise have found.
For those of you who wish to reread your comments and revise or edit out the non-Hawaii content, click the little pencil and paper icon above your post.
