RE: Elections Office - opihikao - 08-20-2012

FYI: County Clerk Report to County Council:

http://www.bigislandchronicle.com/2012/08/20/politics-hawaii-county-clerk-blames-state-deputy-for-election-day-mishaps/

Good God.

Hope today's meeting is productive, and there is action taken to ensure our confidence is restored.

ETA: And, then there's this:

County Clerk Calls for State Elections Review

RE: Elections Office - opihikao - 08-20-2012

FYI

http://www.bigislandvideonews.com/2012/08/20/hawaii-county-clerk-issues-her-own-report-on-2012-primary-election/

HILO, Hawaii: Today, the Hawaii County Clerk Jamae Kawauchi issued a report concerning the Primary Election 2012.

The clerk says a copy of this report has been submitted to the Hawaii County Council and will be discussed at its August 20, 2012 meeting at 10:00 a.m.

The clerk sent this memorandum to the council:

(*See memo at link)

ETA: WTH is going on??? The date of this memo is June 4, 2012 and references the primary election issues...OMG. Whatever. Ugh!

RE: Elections Office - Carey - 08-21-2012

I think what most people that have been involved with this have got to agree with is that it would have been far better if Jamae would have been more open to the fact she is not experience in this office, and that there were some new programs that no one had dealt with (like the @#$%$ "pocket precincts" that may not have been well planned for on both the state & local level - but did get resolved fairly quickly I contacted both the Att. Gen & the reporters dealing with the ??? on the handling of this election).

From what I have found in the university, the school system & businesses here, there seems to be a lack of documentation in this county (and probably state wide) on most anything.... even things like have manuals filed for test equipment in labs & production lines seems to be beyond the "local way of doing things" Luckily it is far easier to retrieve documents in the internet age!

Perhaps it is merely that no one has ever thought to document what & how they do things, or that people think that by not documenting they become irreplaceable, AND NO MANAGEMENT REQUIRES THE DOCUMENTATION!

Obviously, she is incapable of "getting it."

Never has, never will.

RE: Elections Office - opihikao - 08-22-2012

Beyond comprehension. Just when it seems it can't get any more disgusting, it does.

I have serious doubts this will be resolved before the general election. This clerk needs to be removed from election responsibilities, if not her job as a whole.

Perhaps the recent death of Mr. Shikuma has shaken her to her very core? May he rest in peace, and prayers for his family and friends.

Such a sad state of affairs, all the way around the damn block.

You may want to read one of the comments on Tiffany's blog - the commenter who seemed to have known Glen well specified all the training and manuals he had, and how hard he worked to train people - these, IMHO, was positions that required a transition period, not just firing one set of staff, and injecting a second set of staff without any transition time.

RE: Elections Office - Carey - 08-23-2012

LG - IF it is that Glen "specified all the training and manuals he had, and how hard he worked to train people" and when I called those same "trained workers" about the pocket precinct ballots that they had no idea if they or the state elections office was handling them.... then it would seem that these "trained workers" that Glen worked so hard on were 1. not well trained or 2. not giving me their "well trained" best 3. not wanting to bother 4. forgot 5. there was nothing in the training on the pocket precinct & no way for them to check (no fingertip documentation for the clerks answering the phones) & neither of the "trained workers" that Glen worked so hard with would bother to offer to check.... until I went WAYYY over their heads!

Not sure which it is, but they really did not get their act together on that until I contacted the press & Att. Gen... then they figured it out...

ADDED due to news:
State elections officials have had to formally request that Jamae attend the 3 Sept training sessions after she, or any of her staff, FAILED TO ATTEND A SCHEDULED TRAINING for all of the counties elections offices (she was the ONLY county clerk that was a no-show!) that was held in Oahu on Wednesday. This training is to cover the fall election:

Does she just not get it, or does she think she already knows it or did she somehow not get the message of the meeting???? whateva, I think that SOMEONE SHOULD GET THE MESSAGE TO HER...

RE: Elections Office - Kelena - 08-24-2012

Misfeasance or malfeasance. In a close election, Hawaii Island's votes could make a difference (and they always matter). The right to vote is under assault nationwide. We cannot let it happen here, whether it is by accident or design. I am going to call Yagong's office and demand that she be removed. I expect that call to be ignored, but if we all call, it could make a difference.

RE: Elections Office - opihikao - 08-24-2012

Kelena, good! I wrote to Yagong, and copied the other eight requesting the same. They must be getting flooded with phone calls and written requests by now, right? I sure hope so.

Does anyone know when the agenda for the next Council meeting comes out, please? I want to see this issue put on the darn agenda(removal of the clerk from election responsibilities, at the very least). jmo.[Sad!]

Carey, thanks for that update. Incredible, huh?

RE: Elections Office - Kelena - 08-24-2012

We need to have confidence in our elections and the current Clerk is undermining that confidence. This is no longer academic as we know have a contested election (Akaka)due to the polls being kept open by the Governor, which is due in turn to the chaos in our local Elections Office. Plenty of people --ethical people-- would like that job.

If you have an e-mail address, that would be great. I didn't know how to find them for Yagong. I called instead. I was polite but firm.

It seems to get worse every day. And now one of the fired elections workers has died. Nothing those elections workers did justifies, in my mind, throwing the office into chaos. You can get rid of one. Perhaps two. But when you get rid of three, you throw the office into chaos. As a citizen, I would rather have a fair vote that we all have confidence in than have the temporary satisfaction of chastising 3 elections workers for alleged abuses that are unconnected to the integrity of their work.

Fire her.
