I see kalakoas point as the law only applies to a select group of people ... i.e. those not deemed the current 'nouveau alii' by the 'hui'
A lot of people are getting special treatment for whatever reasons...this obviously grates a lot of peoples nerves who were raised with morals and beliefs of equality.

No, I have a solar-powered popcorn popper and a supply of shade-grown fair-trade non-GMO popcorn. Sure, each serving of popcorn costs about $8.50, but it's worth it.

Very entertaining discussion about the appropriate role of government. I'm looking forward to becoming part of this community. I'm a lawyer and a writer and I've written a bit recently on enhanced direct democracy and devolution of power from fed to state and local levels. I'm curious what people on this forum think about self-organizing options as an alternative to state or county-enforced building codes? It seems that there is a good argument to have county building codes, due to expertise and expense of doing it at the sub-division or individual level, but that at the same time the county process has become so beholden to industry that it squelches freedom and creativity in the name of safety. I think a class action suit regarding a homeowner's right to do their own work on their own home is long over due. The state makes an assumption of incompetence regarding a citizens ability to do electrical or plumbing (union inspired) while that same citizen has the legal right to defend himself in court.
I think the citizens would chip in to fund such a suit. We could use a lawyer around here.

I would even tolerate a licensing/inspection paradigm in which an "owner-builder" could be certified for plumbing/electrical on their own home.
As it is, my out-of-state licenses are meaningless here, and I can't get an apprenticeship because I'm not related to the right people, so if I do any electrical or plumbing work, it's automatically "illegal" -- it's not even "safe" to work within the exemptions, because County can choose to disregard the codes.

When you build an experimental airplane you are essentially issued a certificate to perform maintenance on that airplane. You have authority to do things to that aircraft (and only that aircraft) that regular mechanics can do to regular aircraft. If it works for airplanes......
