Mimosa, you should start a history thread where you can talk story about the early days, the early 20th century on the Big Island. I'd love to hear stories about Maui from your wife too. People from all over the world would like to read about what you've both experienced in Hawaii for 80+ years.

I enjoy hearing people speak pidgen, but it's just too hard to read for most people, at least in any great length.

Love the history thread idea!

Second that vote, as I miss the true stories of old, pidgin accepted! How it was as a child on this island, seeing all the hustle and bustle in the "Big City" of Hilo as a port, the cane fields and fruit orchards and the work camps that grew into towns would be great to learn the life and traditions of the island the true way. Along with how he? ventured to Maui to find his beautiful bride to share his life with would also be a bonus, as that is a history in itself of their journey together, one would think.

Are you a human being, or a human doing?

Having gone to a very strict convent school where spelling and grammar mistakes were some sort of sin against God, I used to take gr8 delite in txtin lik dis. I thunk it clever n amuzin. Peepul told me off n sed it woz 2 hard 2 follow. So I had 2 kwit.
However, when I write normally my Englishness becomes apparent. I have no real control over the fact that I use the language slightly differently from Americans. So, to those that think you shouldn't write pidgin, what is the difference between my Englishness and your pidgin? I think you should type as you think. I had to deliberately alter the way I write in order to murder my language. Presumably the same applies to you in reverse. Why should you have to translate your thoughts into perfect English? This is not a convent school. In addition doesn't 'freedom of speech' cover accents? Smile my aloha to you

If spelling and grammar mistakes are a sin they must have a throne in hell for me.I dont try and butcher the english language it just kinda happens.I dont recall any post on puna web i didnt understand. If its got alot of hawaiin words I just look them up no prob.Makes me feel like im learnin something. The pidgen is not that hard to understnd. If you heard some of the hillbillies around sw pa you might think they were talking duck.luckily I speak much better than i spell or punctuate. AS I imagine some of you do as well. And no birchl this aint no convent schoolSmile

It's tough on the eyes to read a post that's one unbroken string of characters. fishenjim, I don't care about your grammar or spelling, but I find your posts almost unreadable because you don't hit the space bar after a period.
That's a very simple thing to fix that would help a lot. [Smile]

As for pidgin in a forum, I'd much rather hear pidgin spoken than read it. The lively personality turns dead on the screen. Not specific to pidgin. I find conversations written in dialect written distracting, even in "great books." Breaks the flow for the reader and calls attention to the spelling over the content.

But if someone normally reads and writes pidgin, and so do the readers, then formal English looks strange. It's all in the context.

No gripe about pidgin. Don't care if punctuation follows the rules.
Do care about white space for the eyes. If that seems weird, try previewing a post you write without white space, and see if you would want to read it. [Wink]

Awesome. Thanks for not getting huffy at a well meant suggestion as some do. It really will improve your post legibility.

Kathy, thank you and your welcome. I think that being nice and people being nice to you is nifty. Being huffy even when people disagree not so much. Although it can be very entertaining here on Puna web. I can almost see the veins in those huffy people's necks bulging and their fists clenching as they post. As I said before it's better than most of whats on the tele.
