While I'm grateful at this point for any services out here, and yes I do find things I need at Island Natch, it's rarely a comfortable shopping experience. Same as Malama market, it's so bizarre to be in lines behind most everyone flagrantly scamming on the system with food stamps. Able-bodied young people popping out kids without a care and letting the hard working folk pay for it. If it was just a few then ok but it's the vast majority. I felt the same way in Malama market, over-priced products catering to the scammers and totally disrespecting the honest responsible hard working folk.

With the closing of Malama and Long's, make a morning stop at 7-11 and you will truly be disgusted by the number of people buying expensive coffee's, candy, sodas, chips... all with EBT cards in hand.

Pahoa has become what is called a "food desert" which is a community where low income people without private transportation have only expensive limited options for food like 7-11s or expensive specialty stores like Island Naturals. I would guess almost all those 7-11 EBT shoppers then get on the bus to Hilo for work or school. If you do not own a personal vehicle and live in lower Puna your shopping choices for groceries are very limited, so for a low income worker or student breakfast and lunch for the day ends up being expensive low nutrition "convenience" foods.

Before being so judgmental stop for a minute and think about the challenges presented in getting affordable groceries in Hilo and then having to take 2 different busses to get your groceries home. You cannot buy large discount quantities of anything, nothing refrigerated or frozen, and how much can you carry on any one trip? I work hard for my money too, and haven't set foot in a 7-11 in years, but I do recognize some of the logistical challenges the poor face, especially the working poor, and why someone could end up having to buy their breakfast at 7-11. The vast majority of EBT recipients are children, disabled or the working poor whose jobs don't pay enough to not need government assistance.

It was like that while Malama was open, too -- too bad the "private" subdivisions can't easily host their own local farmers' markets, seems like a good fit for the "lack of transport" issues.

If living in Puna Makai and shopping in Hilo is a big hassle, why not just move to Hilo?

No kidding, especially with all of the affordable rentals that are available there and the dificulty they are having finding renters.

why not just move to Hilo?

When will everyone stop pretending that Puna is "agricultural" and therefore doesn't need services?

Alternate: if the answer to everything is "drive to Hilo", where's the 6-lane highway with a half-cloverleaf interchange at 130/11 in Keaau?

To - The Cathouse .

Did you try AL for the items you were in search of ?
Did they have everything?
Some others in here suggested some one for the specialty item you were in search of.
We have been thinking also.that Kea'au Naturals might have as well what you are seeking.
Wes is the Owner and Steve is head manager, and Karen S. would also be very helpful .
This thread has been hijacked and needs it's own new thread.
Please fellow punawebbers, lets help out The Cathouse by staying on the general topic.

Wrong. Ten to 15 people get on that bus in the morning.
Watch all those others get into their SUV's and trucks. Since you admitted you haven't been in a 7-11 in years, maybe you should go to the one in Pahoa, in the morning and observe what is really going on.

Construction and congestion should then be a thing of the past in Puna by about 2028.
