It's about the science, not how much money people think they can shake out of it.

Yes, Corporate welfare is indeed rampant.

Fact: Hawaii residents receive the highest welfare benefits in the U.S. http://www.hawaiireporter.com/it-pays-not-to-work-hawaiian-residents-receive-highest-welfare-benefits-in-us

Benefits in Hawaii average $49,175.

Time equals money, this could be why the fast pace to get these telescopes in place to begin with?

--------

gypsy - They have spent SEVEN YEARS on getting all of the approvals in place!

Good morning leilanidude.
13 telescopes already on maunakea in less than 40 years, with Godzilla next. That's a new scope and an extra dollar every 3 years, how long do they take to move up the mountain and build them?.
With the cost of living being so high within the islands, it has made living for the average Hawaiian family here that much more difficult. Work ethic capital, probably is a city like Pittsburgh Pennsylvania (steel city). Hawaii and Hawaiians have been so far away from the rat race everyone races in on the mainland, is it a blessing or demise?. Two different places with different people learning to live differently, respect these islands, these people, their past and future here.

Jmo here: Mauna kea is a symbol of living and life to many, this TMT project atop her promotes the exact opposite. Mauna kea for thousands of years gave life and reasons to live, now man is making her a silent killer. Maunakea peaks some 40% above our earths atmosphere, any manmade pollution would be disrespect to many around this planet.

Pele weighing in with the rise in the lava lake level? ....where is it all going to go when she pulls out the stopper?

space based telescopes work well - its a cost issue ...imho

I took the position years ago - as a transplant - to support the local belief systems ..... when in rome, don't insult the pope - grin

just my two cents

Is this the same gypsy69 who constantly bemoans the lack of opportunities here, the poor education, the dearth of jobs?
Now there's a 1.4B investment and you complain it may push up prices?? What exactly do you want, a handout?

How is a telescope a "silent killer"? By the way, MK is well within the Earth's atmosphere.

gypsy,
I have a comment and then some questions.

The $1.4 billion to build the TMT is for the telescope. It is not a big pot of money that can be used to fund college educations for children on the Big Island if the telescope is not built. If the money is not spent on the telescope, none of the money will be spent anywhere else in Hawaii. You understand that, right?

You have said if I remember correctly, that Mauna Kea is a sacred mountain. Exactly how is it a religious symbol to the Hawaiians (as if you explained to me how the cross is sacred to Christians, and what the cross means to Christians and how it is used in their religious ceremonies)?

Would you describe to me the types of religious ceremonies performed on Mauna Kea, or to Mauna Kea right before the first observations were built? Do you have links to any pictures of these ceremonies? Also, how many Hawaiians were involved in these ceremonies back in the 1950's and 1960's? How many are involved today?
