So just to be clear.... if I have a passenger in my vehicle and I'm dropping them off somewhere, I need to put the car in park, turn off the engine, and remove the keys before they can get out to ensure I'm not getting a ticket?

Of course, unless a cop was right there to hear my engine shutting off, they could always say I removed the keys because I saw them coming and still give me a ticket.

So what is the solution? Hold my keys outside of the vehicle before the passenger gets out? I guess they could argue it was a different set of keys and give me a ticket.

Maybe stop the car and we both jump out at the same time, while I throw my keys into the air and do a McGyver style roll on the ground and catch them? I guess they could still argue that in preparation for the stunt we had hit the "release" button on the seatbelts prior to the vehicle stopping or something.

I guess the only way to absolutely be sure you won't get a "click it or ticket" ticket is to drive your vehicle up to the police station, call them, get it confirmed your seat belt is still on, and then place the vehicle in park, set the parking brake, turn the engine off, and then slowly, and dramatically, remove your seatbelt under their close supervision.

Otherwise, you can definitely get a ticket.

p.s. Make sure your registration and safety check are in order before properly removing your seatbelt.

I used wide ribbon to make a sash that looks just like I'm wearing my seatbelt.

Thinking about sewing it into my jacket, so I don't forget to wear it when I leave the house.

Interesting strategy. I think in my dad's attic there is my old boy scout sash full of merit badges from 30 years ago. And by "full of merit badges" I really mean an empty sash with 2 or 3 badges on it. Whatever. I could fold that in half and wear it like a seat belt getting in and out of the vehicle until I can secure the actual seat belt.

I guess the only way to be "click it or ticket" safe is to have an approximately 25 foot seatbelt extension that you can put on outside your vehicle and then not remove it until you are out. Same thing for your passengers.

ETA: If using this strategy, you should probably have your air bags removed. A 25' long "click it or ticket" compliant seat belt would probably get stuck on a deployed air bag and possibly get wrapped around your neck in an attempt to escape the accident. We've all seen on TV how cars explode after virtually any accident.

Why not just wear the seat belt, every time? If you can remember to start a vehicle and put in gear, why can't you remember to put on the seat belt?

If your vehicle is new enough to have airbags installed maybe you could challenge it in court that a safety device is already installed to prevent injury, so wearing a seatbelt is a moot point. Of course this is all in fun, so don' tell the judge I said it...

I agree. But there is no legal way to let a passenger out of your car under the current seatbelt law unless the driver parks, sets the brake, places transmission in park, and shuts off the engine.

ETA: and remove the keys

I love that! Make it out of an old belt from wrecker and just velcro it onto the shirt of the day. You can say honestly "I AM wearing my seat belt officer!"

Should sell these on eBay!

Or just buy a bunch of these seat belt t shirts, with a choice of colors:

I guess you don't know how airbags work? They work in conjunction with the seat belt. If you get in a wreck without the seat belt on, and the airbag goes off, you are likely to be killed.

Guess I'm still not that well versed on the modern stuff they put in cars. Started muttering when Jerry Brown's nephew needed a job and smog control was invented...
