RE: Gunshots in Beachlots - The_Saints - 03-09-2016

The stated plurality of wounds may simply be indicative of the the type of weapon having been a shotgun. If the subject was shot with buckshot from sufficient range to allow for the pellets to spread, multiple wound tracts may manifest from a single shot. However, at a close range, the spread would be minimal and therefore may result in the pellets acting as a single mass resulting in a single wound tract. Even then, the presence of an intermediate influence, such as a tree branch being in the line of fire, can cause pattern to disperse even at close ranges. If fact, many variables, including but not limited to barrel length, choke constriction, wad type, pellet type, pellet size, and range can all influence the spread, pattern and wound characteristics.

My point is that without the actual details from the official investigation, everything here is merely conjecture. Which is nothing more than gossip really. Ultimately, it is all immaterial to us. The investigation is being conducted by persons who we entrust with such responsibilities. Instead of gawking, which is disrespectful at best, I propose that we take a moment to acknowledge that one life has been lost, and others' lives have been irreparably affected. Then, let's give thanks that we are not in their shoes.

Over my career I managed many investigations in which those who were affected were subjected to further victimization by the callous banter of those in the community. Supposition and rumor can be pretty damn hurtful to those left behind.

The post above goes a long way to explain why an autopsy would have been performed, to determine exactly what killed the victim and how.

The medical examiner determined that Thomas died of gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest.

Let's not Monday Morning Quarterback this thing too much just yet okay? The body is not even in the ground yet and people are already finding fault and smugly stating how they would have done better.

It would be real polite if we could just let the dirty laundry air itself out as the justice system does its thing.

MarkP isn't finding fault or stating what the people involved should have done.
He simply wrote what his personal reaction would have been in a similar situation:
I probably would have barricaded myself inside and called the police.

One shot might have been justifiable self defense. Two shots from a 12 gauge? Probably not. Prison looms for the shooter. At 72, consider any sentence a "life" sentence. He's done.

"Tribune-Herald staff
A 72-year-old man police say shot a neighbor to death early Monday evening in a gated lower Puna subdivision was released from custody pending further investigation."

As he should have been !

I'll ask this question again. How long can they hold someone without charging them? 24 hours? 48 hours?

ETA: OK, Google is my friend. It's 48 hours.

I've had some dealings with the shooter and know him to be a friendly and respectable elderly local without any apparent mental or emotional issues.
