RE: Hawaiian DNA in soil atop Mauna Kea? - kalakoa - 05-01-2017 due to be dismantled after 2033 Right. Becuase everyone has been diligently following the rules. RE: Hawaiian DNA in soil atop Mauna Kea? - ohiagrrl - 05-01-2017 HOT, care to make a friendly wager? ![]() Kkoa true dat. We all prolly dead bumbai due to some massive bungle on the part of that Buggah in office. Prolly a moot point. RE: Hawaiian DNA in soil atop Mauna Kea? - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 05-01-2017 HOT, care to make a friendly wager? ![]() Sure, except I would never know with certainty what I was wagering on. On the fifth day - the scientists who studied the rivers - were forbidden to speak - or to study the rivers. -Jane Hirshfield's poem on creation RE: Hawaiian DNA in soil atop Mauna Kea? - punaticbychoice - 05-01-2017 Kalakoa @9:58:30- Indeed, LOL. I think to complete the capabilities of the observatories, there should be a radio telescope array on the mountain. I believe this was proposed at one time. Still a lot less impact than a new resort. Not to mention more high quality science and jobs. RE: Hawaiian DNA in soil atop Mauna Kea? - randomq - 05-01-2017 Why are people trying to defend or live in the past? Or use it as an excuse not to move forward? The past sucks people. It's full of murder, slavery, tyrants, disease, superstition, hunger, rape, racism, ignorance, etc. They did not have it all figured out back then. The fact that someone from way back might have been up on Mauna Kea means nothing. For all we know there could be DNA from a commoner killed by some Ali'i for looking at him wrong. Or a priest that believed you have to sacrifice a virgin to ensure a good crop. Or someone rich from the mining and adz making operation up there that keeled over from poor health while taking a hike. Or a stray umbilical cord. Who cares? RE: Hawaiian DNA in soil atop Mauna Kea? - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 05-01-2017 Why are people trying to defend or live in the past? Because they think this time around it will be served to them ala carte. They can just pick out the parts they like, and assume it can function out of context with the present day. On the fifth day - the scientists who studied the rivers - were forbidden to speak - or to study the rivers. -Jane Hirshfield's poem on creation RE: Hawaiian DNA in soil atop Mauna Kea? - Carey - 05-01-2017 " I really don't understand what your goals are for this conversation but would like to" I think that most on Punaweb know that my goals are fact-based. So What are YOUR goals...You have changed them in this thread...from going onto the summit & doing DNA studies on the summit soil-to DNA in the cone to (well, I am getting confused about your goals now!) & luckily fact based people pointed out the error in your thoughts on DNA results from the top of Mauna Kea... & yah, I COULD have done it nicer... but you have said yourself that you are educated & that you use educated guess So I will ask you this, you have shown no respect for Kumu Pono, nor Kepa Maly... Why do you disrespect their works? RE: Hawaiian DNA in soil atop Mauna Kea? - TomK - 05-01-2017 "TK, please mind your language and have a nice read. https://www.forbes.com/sites/startswithabang/2017/04/28/is-time-travel-possible-according-to-science/" You're making assumptions again. You appear to be saying, using your understanding of mathematics and physics, that since traveling back in time is impossible, it's then perfectly reasonable to excavate a cinder cone on Mauna Kea, even though you are against doing that. It's an odd position to hold. RE: Hawaiian DNA in soil atop Mauna Kea? - TomK - 05-01-2017 punaticbychoice, "I think to complete the capabilities of the observatories, there should be a radio telescope array on the mountain. I believe this was proposed at one time. Still a lot less impact than a new resort. Not to mention more high quality science and jobs." It's not on the summit, but there is a VLBA radio telescope on Mauna Kea which is part of a much wider array of radio telescopes throughout the US. Secondly, the Smithsonian Submillimeter Array (SMA), close to the summit of Mauna Kea, is considered an array of radio telescopes and provides several well-paid jobs in Hilo that are held by locals. https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/sma/ RE: Hawaiian DNA in soil atop Mauna Kea? - ohiagrrl - 05-02-2017 TomK, If digging up the remains of a cinder cone that has already been levelled and buried under an observatory decades ago after it becomes decommisioned in 2033, in order to determine human remains, is to what you refer, then yes guilty as charged. If examining the soils around the proposed building site using these same or perhaps perfected genetic test in tge near future is to what you refer, then also guilty as charged. The time travel comment was a joke that seemed to go right over your head. Not so many people to joke about physics with and that would be true on this forum as well. Carey, if suggesting that a burgeoning area of genetic research published in a respected journal may be applicable to the Mauna Kea dillemna then guilty as charged. Kumu Pono opened doors in 1996, the cinder cones to which I refer got levelled decades before. I was originally talking about open soils with no visual evidence but a number of people have said this was impossible which seems like an assumption based on anachronistic science. But hey one mans assumption is another mans theory. I support progress but just not at the expense of the Hawaiian Spiritual Community or lower income community. It is such an interesting problem to contemplate how these worlds might work together instead of butting heads like a bunch of old goats. If TK, HOT, and Carey were to represent the Academic Community in an actual town hall with Hawaiians and not mask the smarmy confrontational attitudes behind a computer, I would pay to see it. |
