RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - TomK - 02-28-2019 PS. "Mauna Kea was rejected as the site for TMT 15 years ago, it was planned for atacama which is still the backup plan and the most likely site." This is completely untrue and no, the Atacama is not the backup site and not the most likely place it will be built since two large telescopes are already being built there. And the ELT will be the largest optical telescope in the world, not the TMT. RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - PaulW - 02-28-2019 Bigger than the Astrodome? Do you just make this stuff up or have I misunderstood something? RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - TomK - 02-28-2019 Sorry, I missed this: "My telescope forced employees (up all night) to buy their own coffee so as not to be accused of squandering the ever shinking operating budget on non-essential expenses. TMT has made the situation worse for all telescopes, since they now all have to contract security." 1) Your telescope? 2) No, the observatories have not contracted with security companies for summit security. Sorry, but Alohanaia's post is so full of misinformation and inaccuracies it makes it very difficult to believe anything in his or her's post. RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - geochem - 03-01-2019 quote: Rule Number One of local activist culture: If you are lying faster than the other side can tell the truth, you're WINNING.... And, unfortunately, there is truth to that... RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - knieft - 03-01-2019 quote: alohanaia actually said "larger" not "bigger" but both words are kinda fuzzy, eh? By what criteria? The footprints are not even close. TMT's footprint is less than 70,000 sq ft. Houston Astrodome is just under 400,000 sq ft. Maybe alohanaia meant "taller", but that might not even be true? TMT is projected to be nearly 18 stories high. Astrodome is 18 stories high. But those pesky stories can be anything from 9-25 feet--again a bit fuzzy. TMT is projected to be 180 feet tall. Astrodome is 183 feet tall (25 feet below street level and 208 feet above playing field level). Since TMT is projected to be built at 13,290 ft elevation, it would top out at 13,470 ft. That is 332 ft lower than the summit at 13,802 ft. (You could almost fit the height of two Houston Astrodomes in the gap.) Too bored to estimate the volume. In any case, it is quite disingenuous to claim that "The building is larger than the Houston Astrodome." Cheers, Kirt RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - kalakoa - 03-01-2019 Is the TMT bigger than HART? More expensive? Less inappropriate? RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 03-01-2019 Bigger than the Astrodome? ... Is the TMT bigger than HART? I love this time of the afternoon when ‘Punaweb 20 Questions’ comes on. I’ve got one. Is the TMT bigger than DHHL’s storage facility filled with applications submitted by Hawaiians who wait endlessly on a Homeland property? Wait, one more. If you stacked up the applications made by Hawaiians for a Homeland lease, starting at sea level, would they tower above the height of the TMT when completed? RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - knieft - 03-01-2019 Originally posted by alohanaia: It's sadly funny to see the fruit of of this deception proferred by useful idiots, even here in this thread. Useful idiots? Not sure what that might mean, unless you see yourself as one...? Perhaps you could elaborate? I can understand that I am an idiot, but how does that make me useful? But we can agree on the “sadly funny” bit. And while grafty politicians love bloaty go nowhere construction projects, the sad reality is there is little commitment to fund the subsequent operation of science projects. The international funding is there for the TMT. Are you suggesting “they” would build the TMT and then subsequently abandon it? Are you saying the TMT is “a bloaty go nowhere construction project”? To my eyes the grafty politicians are turning a blind eye as far as support for the TMT goes. Not a single one has come out forcefully in favor of doing what is needed to get construction going. Why they don’t is just sad, and I can find no humor in it. My telescope forced employees (up all night) to buy their own coffee... I understand that coffee is a haole import, but I would like to join the other useful idiots in asking which telescope you work for and in what capacity. TMT has made the situation worse for all telescopes, since they now all have to contract security. TMT hasn’t caused increased security. Those who lack reasonable judgement in their opposition have. Anyway that's enough for now....I will strive to be more thoughtful. I sure hope you reply to the many responses from the useful idiots sometime soon, and, please, strive to be more thoughtful. Cheers, Kirt RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - knieft - 03-01-2019 quote: OK, so bananahead blew it (mildly?) on the no opposition bit, but his/her post had so much more that just goes into the electron graveyard, apparently...? Cheers, Kirt RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - ironyak - 03-02-2019 Which bits do you want to rescue from the dustbin of punaweb history knieft? The part where he says everyone is a poser because they don't know native botany as well as he does or where he shakes his fist and yells at everyone to stay off his damn indigenous yard? ![]() |
