RE: New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse - kalakoa - 04-12-2018 but I agree with following the law until we change it... If only that meant something. http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018/04/12/hawaii-news/lawmaker-senate-sidestepped-own-rules-with-maunakea-bill/ A controversial bill that has the astronomy community on edge might have violated the state Senate's own rules since it was crafted without time for a public hearing. But that might have little consequence since legislators say the chamber can bend or ignore them essentially at will. RE: New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse - PaulW - 04-12-2018 It's not just a question of disagreeing with Kahele, he is actively working towards destroying science on the Big Island. I fear you may have been taken in by his glib tongue. But thank you for your report of the meeting. I will be donating to whoever runs against him at the next election (except if they are even worse). RE: New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-12-2018 OHA gets/wants their 20% cut. How about a 20% discount on UH tuition for all Native Hawaiians majoring in astronomy or an astronomy related field? And when they graduate, a guaranteed homeland property transferred to them or a family member? “Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson RE: New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse - punaticbychoice - 04-12-2018 HOTPE @ 08:46:03 04/12/2018- I'd be interested in the responses to such a proposal, and the response to a proposal for such a Bill in the Legislature. I like the idea. RE: New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse - rainyjim - 04-12-2018 Well. UH programs are a joke internationally. The only reason the IFA 'passes muster' is because they get free access to observing time. Without the $1 lease you can kiss UH astronomy programs goodbye - one of the many reasons I don't support these bills. RE: New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse - punaticbychoice - 04-12-2018 rainyjim @ 10:11:55 04/12/2018- Thank you for your comment. TomK- Do you see the same as rj ? RE: New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse - rainyjim - 04-12-2018 HB 1585 passes in the senate today 15-8 It will go onto the house of reps next... Call your reps folks, write editorials to all the rags, talk to your neighbors RE: New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse - randomq - 04-12-2018 So the building restriction goes into place in 2033, or immediately if the bill is voted into law? I guess it's no surprise the Hawaii state government would vote for an audit, as long as it's not of themselves. They never saw a study they didn't like. I wonder how much it will cost us taxpayers. RE: New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse - Eric1600 - 04-12-2018 I don't know why all these representativies are voting for these two bills. It seems everyone is against them. HB1585 passed. It will put a moratorium on all further construction until UH passes some lengthy hurdles https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=HB&billnumber=1585&year=2018 HB1985 passed. It will stop future telescopes from being built on Maunakea because of the footprint restrictions. It will also create a new management authority where it is mandated that 5 out of the 9 members be Native Hawaiian https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=HB&billnumber=1985&year=2018 HB1585 vote: * Ayes, 15; (everyone else) * Aye(s) with reservations: Senator(s) Baker, Gabbard, Green, Ihara . * Noes, 8 (Senator(s) Espero, Inouye, Kim, Riviere, Ruderman, Taniguchi, L. Thielen, Tokuda). * Excused, 2 (Senator(s) Harimoto, Kouchi). HB 1985 vote: * Ayes, 21; * Aye(s) with reservations: Senator(s) Baker, Gabbard, Green, Ihara, Kim, Riviere, Ruderman, Shimabukuro, Taniguchi, L. Thielen . * Noes, 2 (Senator(s) Inouye, Tokuda). * Excused, 2 (Senator(s) Harimoto, Kouchi). RE: New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse - TomK - 04-12-2018 punaticbychoice - I'm not sure what you're asking of me, but I have posted before about rents for the observatories and the damage it will do the astronomy on Mauna Kea. The IfA attracts some of the best astronomers in the world due to its access to the observatories and therefore the university astronomy/astrophysics/physics courses are very strong. If the observatories have to pay 20% rent to OHA, many observatories will likely close and the IfA will have limited access which hurts recruitment, teaching and research. It will hurt both the university and the state as well as families who rely on the work offered by the observatories and the university. It seems likely the bill will not pass the house, but the worry then becomes what happens if it goes to conference committee. Will Kahele hold some major funding for some project hostage in return for support for his bill/s. And sorry, no matter how likable Kahele might appear in person (this is not something I've seen in any video of him), the fact that he continues to present falsehoods during his Mauna Kea presentations, refuses to answer questions and now seems to welcome the support of Walter Ritte, demonstrates to me that he is not honest and will use any means to create a name for himself when instead he should be representing his constituents. |
