From the USGS :

Cloudy weather hampered mapping efforts on Monday; more complete lava flow maps are expected in the coming days. HVO continues to monitor the eruptive activity via its existing monitoring network, along with new webcams deployed on Monday.

For lava viewing, anybody try out the parking area at Puu Huluhulu? I'll wager the police already shut the observatory access road down at or near the highway?

RE: Mauna Loa erupting - ironyak - 11-29-2022

Saddle Road was apparently packed last night throughout the Pu'u Huluhulu / MK Access Rd intersection.

Also the scuttlebutt is that they're going to be closing the State Park at 5p (scuttlebutt redacted - state rec area to remain open per press release) as well as issuing citations for parking along Saddle so the whole lava viewing process is going to be quite the adventure. Good luck!

Thanks for the reddit link ironyak.  This photo from the Mauna Kea Visitors Center was spectacular:

The mayor just banned parking from mile markers 16-31, but said the park and bathrooms up there will be open 24/7 with night time security. So hey, we have a "viewing area" now. Better than 2018.

Agreed on the need for an official USGS map - they are working on it, but their need to be very accurate is going to struggle against the quickly changing and remote conditions.

As for your musings, you seem to have the vents placed too far west. Using the MAXAR satellite image from yesterday to place them, the flows appear to be captured just onto the east side of the divide and in the Kaumana inundation zone. See attached highlighted descent path towards Pu'u Huluhulu - IMHO, YMMV, etc, etc...

(Sorry for the graininess - PW has a 500k upload limit so lots of cropping and compression is needed)

RE: Mauna Loa erupting - dobanion - 11-29-2022

Yup. Agreed. I just corrected myself once I saw the flow front location on Hawaii civil defense. Should spread out just west of Puu Huluhulu.

HOTPE, yes! That's the link. I did a search for ferris wheel but it didn't show up. It could be permanent. Once the lava stops flowing, tow it across the road and charge protectors a hefty sum for a better view of the desecration.

Source on this?

Mayor Roth quoted Ken Hon (Scientist-in-Charge of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO)) here saying the lava's path is the same as the 1935 flow (so north towards Saddle and then down to the east)

1935, yeah, very similar.

That mean we should drop bombs on it?

Saddle road is on top of 1935 flow right around Puu Huluhulu................
