Maybe, but not all gunshots sound like backfires. Especially if multiple shots are fired from a revolver or semi auto.

I jump at a backfire(or firecracker), but can immediatly recognize it for what it is.

When a neighbor of mine occasionally fired off several rounds, no one around was confused about what it was.

most modern vehicles have an "anti backfire valve" an emissions control device. It cuts off the fuel during de acceleration. If drippy, leaky or removed they can sound 100% like semi automatic fire .... especially a 1000 or so cc pocket rocket with the valve removed. "performance" or simply being 19 being the most common reasons.

Im not saying there is not a lot of random gun fire in puna

but there are also a lot of bad de accel valves out there
