A bit ironic as Harry Kim ruled Hawaii County like a dictator...

And was one hell of a womanizer.. seriously on par with the orange moron's indiscretions..

What I find most interesting about this thread is how the OP, who claims to be a copyright attorney, so blatantly violates the HTH's copyright by reproducing the entire published piece, here. Which, besides violating the Trib's rights goes against all PW norms as well.

But hey, it's just another sunny day on julieweb.org.

I don't think YOU are qualified to discuss attorneys, legal matters, HTH's publishing rules and clearly anything related to PunaWeb rules.

RE: HTH Harry Kim Opinion Piece - ChunksterK - 08-24-2025

At no point does Harry Kim mention Hawaii or how any of the things he denounces will harm Hawaii. This is just another national politics diatribe that has been shoved into Punaweb and doesn't belong here. Per the usual pattern, this will shortly degenerate into name calling and answering every insult with a worse one.

Alas, the days when Punaweb was a place for the sharing of useful information about living in a challenging area or having a civil discussion about local politics are gone.

And just for the record, I am not a fan of Donald Trump or Harry Kim.

"At no point does Harry Kim mention Hawaii or how any of the things he denounces will harm Hawaii. This is just another national politics diatribe that has been shoved into Punaweb and doesn't belong here."

So, an opinion piece written by the former 2-time County of Hawaii Mayor, the former Head of Hawaii County Civil Defense for decades and published in the East Side of Hawaii's official newspaper does not count as Hawaii related?

Based upon what every other poster here on PunaWeb has posted in just the last 2 weeks here on PunaWeb makes your statement a laughable argument at best.

Julie, I will let you have the last word . . . mainly because you don't need any help making yourself look belligerent or ridiculous. Buh-bye!

RE: The Bicker Board - HiloJulie - 08-25-2025

"Julie, I will let you have the last word . . . mainly because you don't need any help making yourself look belligerent or ridiculous. Buh-bye!"

It’s not really a matter of having the last word, and quite frankly, with the over 60 plus sexually degrading posts that I’ve endured being made directly at and about me by one specific poster in the 2 plus years of my PunaWeb presence far outweigh anything one could claim was ridiculous or belligerent that I’ve ever said.

As for Harry Kim’s opinion piece, well regardless of your beliefs of Harry Kim, Harry Kim is 100% Hawaiian and Hawaii related. Harry was, is and remains a 100% Hawaii "Public Figure." Harry Kim would at all times formal, be afforded and referred to with the title of "The Honorable Harry Kim." When he opens his mouth, or types a Letter to the Editor, he is 100% Hawaii related. He is speaking on behalf of Hawaii. One COULD say Harry Kim was speaking for all of us. Or a majority of us. To the logical mind, that SHOULD be automatically implied. The discussion that could have been had was shut down by the closed minded who then took the discussion over, blamed me, the thread locked and here we are relegated to the “Bicker Board.”

As for the National Politics argument, and in as much as I agree with that rule, in principle, today’s world renders that almost impossible.

I suppose I could have added a preceding paragraph to my Harry Kim post filling it with a few “fluff” references of Hawaii this, Hawaii that, Puna this or Puna that, but I just went with his opinion piece. When you look at a majority of posts made of late here on PunaWeb, especially on the ICE thread, the pretzel twisting of adding this Hawaii “fluff” reference is the real thing one could call ridiculous. For example, posting links to the State Department reviewing 55 million green card holders on the presumption that it will affect a few University of Hawaii students, Ag workers and others – is a pretty far stretch in a quest to keep a post “Hawaii related” over the fact that it's pure National Politics.

At any event, my sincerest apologies at trying to engage discussion, but honestly, PunaWeb is just like being the 7th grade transfer student who pissed off the most “popular” girl because her “boyfriend” smiled at me.

Rob is right when he says moderating PunaWeb is like middle school.

Harry is second generation Korean, who grew up in Olaa working at his family Kim Chee factory, and was a far better benevolent dictator, as head of CD, than he ever was a consensus builder as mayor. And even then, when he first got the CD gig in '77, he wasn’t all that good at it. You’ll note his first crisis as the director of CD was a lava flow, from Kiai, threatening Kalapana. And, back then, he played dictator with a heavy hand, and pissed the community off big time. So when he came back in 1990, with the lavas from Kupaianaha, he had worked out the bugs a bit. In other words he figured out how to get what he wanted while endearing himself to many in the community. But god help you if you were a woman left alone with him..

As to his time as mayor. Harry talked a good talk, but never really figured out how to walk. His handling of the TMT protests up on the saddle is a good example. Nice talk, but nothing came of it.

As to Hawaiian.. I mean, come on, he's Korean. But hey, by your measure my great grandkids, who are third generation born right here.. and speak much better on my behalf than Harry, are pureblood. And still, I don’t think a long winded, nationally oriented, opinion piece by any of them would get any more traction hereabouts. So why Harry? Because you were swayed by his charms?

RE: The Bicker Board - Rob Tucker - 08-25-2025

I have little appreciation for Harry Kim. I don't like being lied to and Harry lied big time to the whole island on the Community Development Plans (CDP) Hundreds of people participated and invested thousands of hours based on Harry's promise that "this time it really matters". It was a lie and a scam.

It was all a shell game to keep Federal money flowing. The Feds had required the county to take community input on infrastructure planning and investment. That did happen. But what Harry left out was that while they were collecting community input there was no requirement to actually listen to it or act on it.

Puna's CPP was the first to be passed by council and we celebrated.... shortly thereafter J Yoshimoto, one of our councilmen at the time, handed the Puna community plan over to Shipman Ltd, our largest landowner, and let them make nineteen amendments so it ended up being the Shipman Community Plan. All very Hawaii style.

Screw you Harry.

RE: The Bicker Board - HiloJulie - 08-25-2025

Cool - DISCUSSION! Imagine that!

First, outside of Harry's op ed in today's HTH, where did I ever say I support ALL of Harry Kim?

Secondly, saying Harry Kim is 100% Hawaiian is not a racial reference. It was meant as a reference to his convictions, his years of service - his successes and being VERY CLEAR just exactly as Rob does point out, his faults - "All very Hawaii style."

Regardless of him being Korean, he was, again right or wrong, all Hawaiian. Harry was not some imported mainland haole who came here to run roughshod. Further, he BECAME a politician, and yes, he ended his career more or less just telling people what THEY wanted to hear. And even further, regardless of Harry's successes and his failures, I think we all would be hard pressed to have had someone who was "better" yet "different" in every aspect of defining "better" and "different."

I also know Harry personally. As a woman. And have spent numerous times with him alone. I am a bit shocked at some of the potentially defamatory statements being made about him.

And regardless of all of Harry's successes and faults, his op ed sent a statement. It directly makes National Politics - 100% Hawaii related. Regardless of what you may feel about Harry, Harry said something that affects us all. And if you don't understand or agree with what Harry said in his op ed just because you don't like Harry, well, I can personally attest to knowing just exactly how that feels!
