RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - TomK - 07-26-2019

reni - just a point of clarification as the Wikipedia article is missing some information. The decommissioning statement was to have three telescopes decommissioned and removed by the time the TMT is operational. If built here, that is still several years away. The CSO was chosen because it was being decommissioned anyway, and the UH telescope wasn't working. UKIRT was announced by some people but that was not a final decision and was politically led rather than based on science productivity or commonsense. At the moment, the third telescope has not yet been chosen. As for recent news that five telescopes would be removed, that came as a surprise to the observatories and certainly isn't agreed.

Oh, and astronomy please, not astrology! Wink That's a bug bear of mine!

This whole mess is way beyond me, nothing makes sense. For example why haven't the protesters offered their physical labor to help remove the old telescopes if that's so important to them? Where's all the aloha I hear about up there? Where's the productive behavior? All those able bodied men just hanging around dancing, talking, getting in everyone's way and making demands. Can you spell l o s e r s? Ok I know I'm not being nice but being nice is totally inappropriate in this scenario. You don't enable destructive self-serving illegal behavior. IF I was Ige, I'd call the White House, tell them to give me all they got, arrest the whole lot with very serious consequences, and deny them any future welfare payments or EBT.

bold by me...wasn't the removal of telescope structure back to earth ever part of the agreement for entity granted use of the space after NO USE? what the heck UH?

spelling

Isn't there another road up Mauna Kea from Waimea that connects with Mauna Kea Access road further up the road from the blockade? I know its rough because we drove it on our 4 wheel drive Ford Escape but its there and if scientist need to get up there...it's an option.

RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - TomK - 07-26-2019

One car up for each has happened. This was negotiated through law enforcement. But the protesters have gone back on their word and means there is no reliable means to access the observatories.

thanks Tom...whats your source?

RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - TomK - 07-26-2019

macuu22 - I believe it's closed right now and being watched, so no, not a reliable means of getting to the summit. The protestors would soon know it's being used and would block it off as well.

RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - TomK - 07-26-2019

Frank - my sources are the observatory directors and deputy directors as well as observatory staff, OMKM, MKSS and law enforcement.
