there is lots of discussion going on, to bring back to topic, the economic impact of TMT "controversy"

We never went off topic!

#1 If the TMT is built, with it's larger lens it will be capable of discovering exoplanets with untold riches: A DIAMOND PLANET!

#2 imagtek now has a reason to put his plans for a warp drive into action, and creates the largest interstellar spacecraft shipyard right here in Puna. LOCAL JOBS!

#3 Women crew: EQUAL OPPORTUNITY & JOBS FOR PLUMBERS!

Hypothetical jobs. Also, no matter how pretty the packaging, most of those jobs will be going to mainland transplants, not locals. That $59 million in local income revenue is from the salaries of the observatory workers being spread around the island, mostly up north. Those observatory worker salaries are coming from taxes from multiple countries. Astronomy has always been socialist, requiring monarchy government patrons when it was astrology and still requiring government taxes today. Yes, there is some private money but then that goes back to the old patron donation, which isn't a business economic model. Even though astronomy has operated on the welfare business model, the general vote is that it is one of those human efforts worth spending tax dollars on. In the end, astronomy jobs are basically government jobs and government jobs are the largest employer on this island. It's too bad the whole subject of economics had to become attached to the TMT.

Hypothetical jobs.

It's based on the existing Hawaii Island workforce model of hypothetical county services.

I think PT is simply making a push for the position of humorless Vulcan or android on imagtek's trip. Every star ship needs one.

Vulcans are cool! But I'm not here to defend androids. Or people who think the only enterprise worth doing is that which is done by private enterprise.

"But I'm not here to defend androids."

We use subspace. Android users haven't figured this out, yet. Unlimited download speeds most of the time depending which quadrant you live in.

I've got an iPhone.

Always the last word, I love it! [Wink]

But they don't work in tachyon fields, whatever they are.

Does anyone know where I can get a radioisotope thermoelectric generator? It gets really really really f---ing cold in interstellar and solar panels no use. A bank of golf cart batteries might get me to solar escape velocity but then what?

Information theory and the quantization of space dictates that an acceleration pod based upon space warping is possible. Google
'SNR MSH 11-16A' to see a naturally occurring manifestation of this effect. No way something that massive gets accelerated to that speed by some sort of blast effect or without a similar mass object flying in an opposite direction. Space warped in the supernova blast and this thing squirted out. Under relativity theory, a warping of space would manifest as an acceleration.

Anyway, I really need a radioisotopic thermoelectric generator or information on where I can get one.

The Mars rovers have them so just dress real warm and when you get to Mars you can just steal one.
