Yeah Alaskan 66, back to the title of the topic... also whats with your bad boys theme? It only fits for some of these threads. Meanwhile as you guys talk all the interwoven politics about this, there were very loud bangs and noises at around 1:30 or 2:00 this morning, apparently another release or mechanical malfunction or blowout venting etc. Girlfriend lives there and was telling me about how her daughter came into her room at 2 this morning because she couldn't sleep, the noises were so loud even through the rain.

Mahalo for sharing Elysianwort.

One of My son's also woke around that time of 1:30 or 2:00 a.m not feeling very good, he needed some extra TLC. Our Power was out at that time is why I say about 1:30-2:00. One of My other son's woke with a bad headache and I would not have sent another son out early this morning to run his miles had we known about this release from the PGV, now I feel bad. We had no idea about this second release or the first release until we read about it on PWEB.

It strikes me that both sides of this issue are so entrenched that they can't (or won't) see that the best route probably lies in the middle. There have been several "events" (purposely using that vague term) in the last few years, including two in the last couple of weeks. PGV protestors are maximizing the events' impact, and PGV supporters are minimizing them.

Personally, I agree with the supporters that the events haven't caused any actual damage, any actual symptoms in people who live nearby, etc. But I'm now starting to lean a little towards the protestors in the sense that perhaps this specific installation of Geothermal has some problems, and perhaps this installation should be scrapped for something newer, safer, etc. so that we don't have an "event" that actually includes real injuries and damage.

Thoughts?

perhaps this specific installation of Geothermal has some problems

It has one major problem: it's built next to a subdivision which allows residential uses.

It doesn't help that all geothermal leases are governed by State, with zero County oversight.

Residents of that subdivision should file a class action lawsuit against County for the problems created by "faux residential" zoning, with a settlement of "upzone all to C/ML".

Alternate solution: shut down PGV and replace it with an oil-fired generator, because these are perfectly safe and clean with zero side effects.

replace it with an oil-fired generator

Better yet, a palm oil fired generator. Then nearby residents can turn their yards into palm oil plantations, and sell the kernels to the electric plant for extra income.

(long... deep... inhalation as burnt palm oil exhaust wafts through the neighborhood) "I love the smell of palm in the morning. Smells like victory!"

Puna has always been one of this planets miracle healing places. Most just haven't needed, discovered, or experienced it yet. This article helps explain the importance of Nature for the human brain. jmo

This is a fun article sharing some of our Big Island resources.

Unfortunately, The PGV power plant has been one big infectious sore in the middle of a beautiful district for decades. Puna needs a facelift that includes reforestation efforts and the removal of this outdated geothermal power plant. "If" and when a new PGV power plant is built, it should be built above sanfords cinder pits in upper Opihikao. This would put the operations further away from large residential areas and possibly closer to their desired "resources". Jmo

Puna has always been one of this planets miracle healing places.

On days when the air is clear, when the tradewinds blow comfortable and clean air across East Hawaii, do you enjoy the moment? Or continue to obsess over the 3 or 5 days a year the PGV plant might release some steam? What about the vastly greater number of days when PGV doesn't vent emissions, but Pele fills the air with pea soup thick vog? Does that naturally occurring atmospheric condition disrupt the mind-body continuum more or less than PGV?

In the past, you have complained about hearing drilling that wasn't happening...

So how did you not hear the steam release? Maybe its because you never heard any of this in the past either? How would it be possible for your son to awake with a headache caused by the release - before the release even happened, let alone, instantaneously when you live about 3 miles away?

The PGV release may have interfered with a space-time sequencing progression over lower Puna, disrupting the normal functioning of clocks and vapors?

Mr, world Bankman. Sorry I Can't tell you exactly what time it was that my son got up feeling ill because our power "Helco's electricity" was out during that hour of the morning. Do the PGV's air monitors work when the power goes out or your T.V? My clocks don't. My son had never woke feeling that way before this morning and thankfully we were here to help him go back to sleep.
