RE: New speed bumps by Hilo airport - My 2 cents - 04-26-2018 Did your motor run out of gas? RE: New speed bumps by Hilo airport - MarkD - 04-26-2018 Tom, the link accurately describes the date in 2014 for the installation of the speed bumps on the pedestrian side, though possibly several of those bumps had been installed there earlier. Re the new ones on the Puna side, installed several months ago, perhaps there was no notice in the DOT website (not usually read by the public in any event). Should we expect that officials provide the public explanations for what they do? Don't they regard that as optional? [And here would be the stock answer (from the 2014 link): "to address community concerns about speeding..."] RE: New speed bumps by Hilo airport - hotinhawaii - 04-26-2018 Let’s put speed bumps every 100 feet along the highway heading to the airport and lower the speed limit to 15 there too! That’ll make it really safe. (I’m going to put this on my application to work for DOT. Think I’ll be hired?) RE: New speed bumps by Hilo airport - Kapoho Joe - 04-26-2018 Hired on the spot with that kine vision! RE: New speed bumps by Hilo airport - TomK - 04-26-2018 "Tom, the link accurately describes the date in 2014 for the installation of the speed bumps on the pedestrian side, though possibly several of those bumps had been installed there earlier." But aren't they speed "humps"? RE: New speed bumps by Hilo airport - Durian Fiend - 04-27-2018 This move would be understandable if it were over the concern of pedestrians being struck by cars in this area, since speeds of 20 mph or lower are necessary for someone to survive such an impact. I don't frequent the airport much, so don't feel well versed on what goes on there, but my limited impression is that the posted speed limit is ignored and exceeded by a large percentage of individuals. So, perhaps they're "reaping what they've sowed" in this case. RE: New speed bumps by Hilo airport - MarkD - 04-27-2018 Here's pix on speed humps and speed bumps. The listed speeds: Humps: 10-15 mph -- Bumps: 2-10 mph http://www.reliance-foundry.com/blog/speed-humps-vs-speed-bumps#gref Speed humps, such as the ones on Haili St. in Hilo, are often built into the road and are not just a plastic rise laid down and bolted to the road. The airport speed bumps look similar to the ones in the link. RE: New speed bumps by Hilo airport - TomK - 04-27-2018 Thanks, MarkD. I'll take a drive over there this weekend and make up my mind. RE: New speed bumps by Hilo airport - MarkD - 04-28-2018 If you're going to go through that effort, share your opinion with us, Tom! RE: New speed bumps by Hilo airport - PaulW - 04-28-2018 I was at the airport recently and they are definitely humps and not bumps, in my opinion. I hardly noticed them before. If I don’t have to stop then for me it’s a hump. |
