We bought the house when it was 5 years old...all the inspections were signed off on like you'd think they would be. I spoke with the Engineer down at the Bldg Dept. He was apathetic at best. He WAS a little surprised that the GC admitted to "knowing" there was green waste buried.

We have found with our house that inspections aka 2000 were not the same as today... much more "informal'. Coming from Chicago, we do understand some of this "informal-ness", but even in Chicago, there seemed to be a line drawn at safety, from what we have seen here... not so much.
I would say to anyone looking at a house with permitted work done at around 2000 to not take ANY assurances as to the work done.... from what we have seen in our house, and houses like Carrie's, the permit process then had some .... issues....
ETA: we did do due diligence, checked that all remodel work was permitted, had the house inspected by an inspector that came with multiple recommendations.... but none of that could have accounted for the permitted work that was done on this house that was not up to code, and standard construction practices (walls & trim can hide many evils....).

This all just sucks, Carrie. I told Carol about it and she agrees that it sucks.
