With all due respect to the scientist in you, what we cannot possibly get our heads around is the concept of the infinite Universe. Although there is conjecture that it is finite, I believe that is man's inability to conceive of infinity in both time and space. You can call it magical thinking or just plain BS, but in my world, it's the reason for the origin of the creator myth. With infinity comes infinite possibilities. In every age of our (man's) short existence, we've believed in absolutes that have been proven incorrect. All I'm saying is I don't know. Just sayin'

Fords originally ran on alcohol and diesels on peanut oil. We were lead down a different path by those with petroleum mineral rights. Prohibition was not to eliminate drinking, it was alcohol fuel production that needed to be curbed to create a monopolized market in petro. At one time a car could travel the northeast seaboard filling up on alcohol at farms.
Water could be hydrolyzed into it's separate elements of hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen is how the space shuttle gets into orbit.
Unfortunately Stan Meyer died a mysterious death after rejecting billions for his patents.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO7NBhL-zrg&feature=related The technology is out there but there is still much money to be made in petro. So the abundant clean energy of hydrogen remains in the dark.

We were led down a path that worked.
Until relatively recently, alcohol fuels contained water, and still contains less power per volume (in the form of BTU's) than gasoline does. Alcohol fueled engines don't start in cold weather - period. Ask any racer who has an alcohol fueled vehicle about starts below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. (I used to help a friend run an alcohol fueled quarter-midget car)

Since I first saw a solar car, we put a man on the moon. If some of that energy were put into making a solar car viable, maybe they would be practical today. The petroleum industry has never exactly been warm and fuzzy.

Solar cars don't work in the dark, and batteries don't last all night.
Electric cars also don't work in the cold. What if you were stuck in one of those recent snowstorms/blizzards and were in an electric car? You wouldn't have heat very long, would you?
While solar, wind and electric cars sound all exciting, they are simply not practical.
Fuel cell technology will probably be the next step. You may be surprised that the oil companies have been investing in the technology for some time.

One interesting car that I thought might actually make it to our shores that was supposed to be made by Tata Motors uses compressed air for propulsion. Here is the article I read a couple of years ago:

Maybe Tata Motors is too busy with Jaguar to put engineering dollars into the compressed air car?
