Where you can see the evolution to bitter distain raising its ugly head and a lot of noises along those lines beginning to infest. This one even has the first time I (under the moniker of dakine) ask Rob to put an end to it.
I, seriously, credit the downfall to PaulW and TomK, who collectively, for years drove dozens, hundreds of PW participants away with their constant bullying and browbeating. Serious people, wonderful people, professional people, and every other walk of life, who just have no interest in being witness to their endless haranguing. But, in all honestly, Rob allowed it to happen under the guise of its a real reflection of the people of our community. Learn to live with them. Which in some way I can appreciate. In others.. well I wouldn't run the place like that.
And, now, with the tone of the national discourse being so raunchy, so childish and divisive, I fear many have taken to believing that is a natural way for humans to interact.. imagine that.
And still, all told, besides the history lesson, I agree completely Kane.

Sorry Tangy, I'm too old to lead the way. Besides, I already got my hands full with my 8 elderly neighbors, the occasional drive by drop off of my teenage grandson, generally along with a gaggle of 4 to 6 teenage buddy's along with his 3 year old sister as well as a 4 legged 24 pound sack sheer terror that can only be described as Lucifer in the fur.
But the one thing those 8 elderly neighbors know and feel every day is that feeling of shame, like being somewhat embarrassed when we or other neighbors come to their aid with some extra cooked dinners, extra foods, a weekly invite at our place for dinner, maybe a special dinner at Luquins or some other local restaurant for a birthday or holiday, with them deep down knowing that if we didn't do that, they would go a bit hungry. Also shuffling some back and forth to Hilo or even Honolulu for doctor appointments as well as helping to keep yards and homes maintained, one time replacing a $600.00 water pump and expansion tank for one of those neighbors but telling them it was a $2.00 pressure switch hose from Ace Hardware, only to be reimbursed that $2.00 with 8 quarters. Just because they are too old AND too poor to do it themselves. But despite that, they sure are 100% pure class. Hope that's not a problem for you!

While it's hard to not like an EA Poe reference, and points need to be given for effort and creativity, this seems to miss the mark on accuracy and insight. It seems that HJ is taking flak from those left of center like MM and kalianna, along with those right of center like Tang, TomK, Wahine/Kane, leilanidude, & Obie so it's more like personal differences/grudges than political tribalism. Still, the post overall is much better than your usual kekistan edgelord contributions, so I'd give it a "Litbro Libtard" score of 3/5, off the mark but entertaining.
If those of a certain political persuasion feel put upon, maybe they could bother to check if what they are posting has any evidentiary basis in reality instead of just going with whatever vibe-based talking points support their feelings? Almost all of human knowledge is at your fingertips, why not make use of it? It would really save us all a lot of time having to debunk/dunk.

I don't know, Punaweb has always had a fractious side from my experience starting a few years after yours (there's a reason you're a few monikers deep at this point ;), but clearly y'all did more in direct aid and face-to-face interactions back in the day. Politics was easier to put aside before 2016ish when license was given to say the more racist, homophobic, & misogynous quiet parts out loud and the harms of those beliefs became government goals.
For Punaweb, I actually put the major vibe shift pivot point at the TMT discussions (compared to say this related discussion a few years earlier when Kane could do paragraphs and nuance! ;) where the fact that some Native Hawaiians might actually have any input, much less an ultimately successful objection, to the project seemed to break a lot of Punawebber's brains. The start of the COVID pandemic didn't improve any of this slide towards reactionary politics and the mask-off exposing of the lack of empathy or humanity from many that continues to this day has become hard, if not impossible, to overlook.
Not sure where things will, or even can, go from here when "ultra-leftist's: It would be good if people have access to food, housing, healthcare, and education" vs "the-right's: Get cucked, libtard" is often the extent of "discussion" possible.
Personally, I'm fine with how Rob runs things whether he wants to be hands-on or laissez-faire. It's his sandbox and when in Rome / Sparta do as the Romans / Spartans do. (Salve! let's check those ideas against this amazing library of knowledge we have / This... is... Punaweb! ;)

Let me be abundantly clear here. I think anything and everything we can do to help our impoverished youth and elderly adults and everyone in between that, for whatever reason, don't have it as well off as others is of extreme importance to society. Doing that benefits each and everyone of us. If YOU are committed to doing that, from as they saying goes, cradle to grave, then you deserve a huge compliment, pat on the back and a genuine Thank You.
Now, the being abundantly clear part:
What good does raising and instilling a sense of hope and security in those less fortunate, when as we see today, at a moments notice, on a whim, on a Tuesday or by an Executive Order, (or as I imagine, a bet, similar to the $1.00 bet in the movie Trading Places) or, on the other hand, after months of congressional debate, punctuated by those congressmen and women being threatened to "toe the line" or be faced with career ending "shame" with the result of having that proverbial rug just yanked out from underneath those poor helpless people? Who in desperate need regardless of the how and why, would ever have imagined what did not happen last November 1st?
Coupled with constantly being flooded with the assertion that most, if not all recipients of any and all public assistance are scammers, illegal aliens, already dead or just the spawn of some uncaring mother who needs another kid to make more money?
To be honest, if I was 20 years younger today, I'd put my time and energy into a PAC that would lobby for and get enshrined into absolute law that these public assistance programs be untouchable.
Now, I can already hear the click clack of the keyboards - yes, there is waste, fraud and abuse. But, being brutally honest, I think we could virtually eliminate most of that by putting into place all the necessary and required safeguards to weed out any such waste, fraud and abuse for the cost of a few round trips to play golf from DC to Florida, Bedminster or Scotland, or the costs being incurred in endless frivolous tens of billions of dollars lawsuits against various news outlets as well as the taxpayers for perceived insults.
At any event, if you are truly sincere in your mission, godspeed to you. I truly hope you can be a tremendous help in assisting anyone who needs it. I truly do. I just hope after all that hard work and subsequent reliance given to these kids, moms and elders, YOU don't have to be the one to look those kids, those moms, those elderly in the eye and say "I'm sorry, nothing we can do. It's the law now."
Oh, as for the gang of 8, Barney, my husband and I personally funded, even though they did eventually get, what they should have got last November 1st. No questions asked, no repayment necessary, required or accepted. That would have been way too many quarters to handle anyways. So, I think I got their vote "in my pocket!"
Now, off for yet another round of estrogen shots making a delicious lasagna dinner that can be fully prepared, put into nice Pyrex baking dishes, then frozen and then given to the neighbors tomorrow morning so all they have to do is pop it into their oven later tomorrow afternoon and enjoy!

Well, I do appreciate the effort made - if you can't be informative at least be entertaining! And as you mentioned elsewhere, if Mr. Kane and I chatted we'd probably find plenty of things we agree on, and could maybe learn a bit from each other about the things we don't. ("the sly blade of biased moderation, wielded with the cold precision of those who claim dominion over discourse." - lol, not a big supporter of private property rights? ;)
But all that requires more than dropping a skewed, if amusing, take and noping out again to avoid the challenge of dialog, analysis, and nuance, which as Edge mentioned, the right-of-center folks don't generally seem to be interested in, or maybe even capable of. I'm always happy to be proven wrong.

Well, it's your option to handle however your compass guides you. The above really is a microcosm of so much on Punaweb and in the world. I'm fascinated that the ballot proposal that I envisioned as a "yes" or "no" vote for the moms (which I'm sure any 8 randomly selected Hawaiians would predictably do the right thing)- was perceived by you to be an election about you against the moms.
