Oh, I know Pahoted is not an Astronomer......I just wanted to prove the point that only a person with extensive Astronomy experience should toss around opinions like that. I know a bit about Astronomy, but a limited amount about IR Astronomy; I would never dream of telling any of the MK Telescopes that they were obsolete. I fear I'd end up suffering form a severe case of foot in mouth disease.

I can tell you with certainty that pahoated is not an astronomer and is not knowledgeable in the field. He gives this away everytime he posts about the subject or the observatories on Mauna Kea. I suspect professionals in your own industry feel the same when some MS flight simulator buff tells you how to fly an aircraft and deal with an emergency.

Professionals tend know when someone is doing a Walter Mitty act in their own field of expertise, and yes, it irks me.

recommission the Michelle imager/specrometer once again at UKIRT and it is our current primary instrument. No other observatory in the world has the capability Michelle offers.

Seems like an odd priority given that Ige has already thrown UKIRT under the bus.

Meanwhile, I keep hearing these rumors that TMT staff have given up and moved back to the mainland, which will make it that much more difficult to restart that project...

Seems as if UKIRT has become the sacrificial lamb. So sad.

Nothing. At all, Sir.

Lots of poor decisions, politics overrides common sense, and rules are apparently made to be broken.

Shameful (Hilahila); On both sides of this particular issue.

Aloha ahiahi, Sir.

AKpilot,
I hope you don't get some gobbledygook from me. I tried to send you an email (I'm Pam, Tom Kerr's girlfriend, not some stalker) just saying I enjoy your posts. After clicking to send I got a big dramatic screen announcing problems!
Ack! Who knows what it sent Smile I apologize if it sent a mess[Smile]

I don't understand. I'm doing the job I'm paid to do and the one I love. Michelle is currently making some new discoveries in a field it was never used for in the past. What priorities would you expect me to follow instead?

As for TMT staff leaving the island, maybe they really are what you say, rumors. I can't imagine many TMT staff moving here when the telescope is still so many years away from being completed.

I don't expect individuals (especially those with fulfilling careers) to reprioritize themselves.

In this particular case, it could easily be argued that keeping UKIRT productive is the best argument against the political idiocy.

I can't imagine many TMT staff moving here when the telescope is still so many years away from being completed.

Obviously there's no need for technical staff -- yet -- but there must be an office full of paper-pushers somewhere, effectively "on the beach" for the duration of the "permit validity lawsuit festival".

Aloha, Mr. Tom. Mahalo for your continued dedication to our scientific future.

With regard to UKIRT, and all the stupid decisions our State of Hawai'i has made to date, may I please, Sir, take you up on your offer for a tour in the near future. I continue to struggle with going up to the summit, given Kupuna teaching. However, would appreciate the option.

Surely, the State, BLNR, DLNR, UH, and all involved, will revisit these decisions given the "knee jerk reaction" of late. Having the "Emergency Rules" invalidated was quite a blow. Perhaps, the State of Hawai'i needs some sort of check and balance; sans the freaking politics. Responsibility lies in the State's lap. They allowed this crap, now, time to try and fix it. After all, election season is upon us! (Gag...[xx(]) Shameful.

Still waiting patiently for the Supreme Court decision re: Permits for TMT. Trust it will be the right one.

Much aloha, Sir. Trying times, indeed.

JMO.

P.S. The moon is lovely tonight, and the stillness of the evening is calming. Aloha, Pam, continued prayers for your return to Moku o Keawe soon, in good health. (Apologies to all, O/T)

Kalakoa,

Making sure Michelle is working well is important to maintaining UKIRT's scientific productivity. It's vital for studies of solar system objects and orbital debris, which is now a large part of UKIRT's mission these days. As for scientific productivity being a good argument to keep UKIRT operational, I would agree but it's clear right now science is not the reason UKIRT was chosen to be decommissioned. To have politics interfere with good science is always frustrating and quite difficult to fight, but the decision will be fought.

Opihikao,

More than happy to give you and a couple of family members a tour but my schedule over the next few months is pretty crazy, so this might not be possible until well into the new year. I hope that still works for you.

(BBM) Yes, indeed, Sir. Disgusting.

Mahalo for your continued offer. We shall cross paths one day, perhaps not on Mauna Kea, but over a beer or a fine glass of wine, when Pam returns, in celebration.

Aloha to you, Sir.
