RE: Food Inflation - dmbwest - 07-13-2013

Here ya go Julie,

So you looking for something to do with kids ??? ....... Flour and water ... EZ clean up + can eat !!!
Other than water and Sauce I got on sale @ Target another day. I bought all this stuff tonight.

1.5 cup King Arthur flour .40
Whole Wheat
3/4 +/- cup water .0?
Pinch of yeast .15
8 ounces sauce .69
4 ounce cheese 1.20
1/2 Redondo Sausage .69
Pinch of Seasoning Salt .05 ?
One green pepper .79

Total before tax .................... 3.97.

Please note above is for TWO pizzas that weigh 22 ounces EACH before cooking ..... So if you compare to Totinos @ 1.88 which weigh 10.7-10.9 ounces I think, this makes above nearly 1/2 the price.. Carey will do the math for me later : ) LOL.

[unknownjulie]:
"This is a generalization of course, but statistics show that boomers are controlling large amounts of wealth/resources in this country- including jobs! They are hoarding jobs that could go to younger people...I just absolutely to not want to live the way I see so many boomers living. And I also do not agree that boomers have "worked harder than younger generations and therefore deserve everything that they have".... IT is just harder for the younger people right now to get ahead and I do not appreciate boomers who had it so much easier... large disparities here between the wealth of the older retirees, and the younger people here trying to make it..."

Yes, unknownjulie, this is a very large generalization, and I don't really understand what you are saying. How can you "hoard" a job? Generally a person OF ANY AGE has a job because he/she needs one to survive. And why is it harder for younger people to get ahead than it was for us older people? I & many of my peers struggled to find a job, feed the family, keep a roof over our heads. There was even a few years when we had to get food stamps & surplus gov't food to get by. It was by no means "easy." Now I'm 68 and finally can collect the social security I paid into all those years. I can count on that every month, and we've paid off our modest house after a 40 year mortgage- is that the disparity in wealth you seem to resent? I don't know who claims our generation worked "harder" or "deserve everything" - it's an age and a path that many younger people are on or are aiming for (owning a home, having some income to live on in retirement).
I and many of my friends in Puna also give back in many ways to the younger generation by sharing food, taking in young folks who need a place to stay, etc. I think you've got a skewed view of us elders. I should end with another quote from you:
[unknownjulie]:"Go find someone else to pick on."

Walmart has eye-poppingly low prices (and Target is now cheaper?? I'll have to check that - thanks Bullwinkle).
It would be a disaster for Hawaii if they weren't here.

If you prefer to pay higher prices elsewhere, feel free.

I can't say I've noticed any recent drastic food price increases.

RE: Food Inflation - dmbwest - 07-13-2013

Right on Maud ! ... ( IMO ) Now we MORE experienced and can relate to and advise our Keiki BETTER than our parents did to us.
REALITY vs. REAL-tv.
I for one, am in no way worried about my son's or his childrens future.

aloha,
pog

Totino's Pizzas are $1.50/ea this week at Safeway.

RE: Food Inflation - OpenD - 07-14-2013

For those who think that shopping at WalMart is the answer, please keep in mind that 80% of WalMart employees are on at least some kind of public assistance, and that WalMart depresses average wages for the area.

Walmart's low wages cost taxpayers...

Reni, Kalamungay is the Indian term for the Filipino Malunggay, also the Moringa olifera:
http://www.starrenvironmental.com/images/species/?q=moringa+oleifera&o=plants
We have a 'mother' tree on our lot & have rooted & given away many cuttings from her, along with seed - the seed oil makes one of the finest veg. oil - "ben oil' that does not go rancid & has been used in fine machinery for decades (sewing machine oils are often ben oil!)

Right now I am enjoying a fruit smoothie with moringa leaves... I use them for everything I would use spinach for... lasagna, salads, smoothies, & it is always there for the picking.... only problem for us is keeping it trimmed (common thread in our yard.... ;~)

here are just a few of the websites I have posted in the past on this plant:

RE: Food Inflation - nani1970 - 07-14-2013

Thank you reni and maud, for all of your positive input.
Yep, most of us have struggled.
Again, I think in living a longer life you can see the big picture, and can relate,
To a lot of different aspects in life.
I learn wisdom from older people, and I love the energy and hopefulness of the younger generation.
Now that I am old I understand my parents a lot more.
We all need each other.
I appreciate your comments.
Again, we are blessed with all the food choices here in Hawaii.

RE: Food Inflation - Carey - 07-14-2013

I have not tried to answer this, as it did not pertain to the original posting...but since the OP has kept this line up I will address it:

I do not know why UJ has decided to rail against an entire generation (most likely the one her parents belong to) but do want to add a very real local perspective:
many baby boomers that were born in this area of Hawaii:
Had many family members or family friends that served in WWII (Hawaii territory had a very large percentage serving) before they were born
Had family members or family friends that were sent to internment camps before they were born
Had been raised in/near a town that suffered from 2 of the worst tsunamis ever to hit anywhere at the time...in their town
Had repeated shortages due to many problems with shipping to this island
Experienced severe job loss with the total loss of the sugar industry in the 1990's - at a time much of the country experienced spectacular growth the poster refers to....

I was not a Hawaii Baby Boomer, but my cousins were...they had much less than we did, and I was a Baby Boomer from a single parent household...at a time when there were no school lunches or breakfasts, no wage garnishing to insure alimony, no mandated child health care.

perhaps Baby Boomers also GAVE some, in order to fund some of the things that single mothers now can count on....perhaps

RE: Food Inflation - dragon2k - 07-14-2013

Sounds pretty defensive to me. A bunch of excuses. The bottom line is has this country benfitted from the boomer generation? Are we better off now? America is a nation in serious decline and the inheriting generation has a right to be critical. Seems to me we went from the 'greatest generation' to the 'good enough' generation. Just my two cents, YMMV!
