Well I did not know we were including medicare/medicaid in the discussion, thats a whole different can of worms. Half these poor sods have diabetes and the other half will get cancer, with the hospital costs the way they are, $100 for a bag a saline and what not, I have know idea how we are going to pay for it. But honestly if you run the numbers right, they are not getting their wealth back on SS, I believe the wealth was used to balance the budget in the 90's. Who knows, and why should we care anyways, lets all get back to playing our violins while the ship sinks, at least thats enjoyable.

I was speaking at length today with someone who was making more money per year 25 yrs ago, than they make now. This was back when the state basically "gave you free money" (I had a state job then too) in the form of benefits. I dont know what is going to happen and hopefully, I will get a job soon, so I dont have to rant anymore on a message board. I will be too busy! The state jobs back then weren't called "entitlements" they were called "good salaries, and retirements".

"free money" - exactly how did this "free money" come to be in the hands of governments who so freely gave or should i say assigned away? governments DO NOT GENERATE one (1) dollar per say...on occasion the government will facilitate the generation of money but for the most part governments TAKE money from individuals who generate money thru this economy/commerce...government employees DO NOT generate any money in the real cents (sic) either...government employees have a job because of working people in the market place...no market place---no free money

I would say IMO that about 25% of the people gettting social security checks dont really "need" that money.
The study you cite does not say 65-74 year old people are independently wealthy, it says their income hasn't gone down due to inflation. It hasn't gone up either. That group is treading water. Then you took that information, and imagined that 25% of retirement age people have magical menehune bank accounts which give them money whenever they want it. You made an apples and oranges comparison. If you had time to find the first study, I'm simply asking for you to find another study that describes:
1) How many 65-74 year olds are independently wealthy (really, not 25% IMO)
Then you will know if your original premise is correct or not.

No. It's all about UNJ and the bombs she loves to toss into a crowd.

Thanks, Frank, for posting that link (at the bottom of page 5) this morning.
The one from yesterday's West Hawaii Today?
Some mighty dire statistics there.

"19 percent — one in five — Hawaii seniors live in poverty..."

“There are more people in Hawaii (in poverty) under that supplemental measurement than in most other states,”

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation report. Among other statistics about senior citizens AARP tracks, Matheis noted that 87 percent of Hawaii’s residents received Social Security benefits, and a large portion of those recipients rely on the federal payment for 90 percent or more of their annual income."

AARP official zeros in on Social Security, Medicare

It's more like an M. Night Shyamalan prequel. She doesn't see dead people yet, just retired people.
