We went about 10:30 and there was a few minutes wait to get off the highway coming from Hilo and turning left. no wait coming from Pahoa. When we left after 11:00 there was no wait.

My wife and daughter went to the Makuu Market today. Wife said there was a bad traffic jam trying to get into the market. She said they sat for a good 10 minutes before they were able to get into the market parking area. They were heading towards Pahoa, and were waiting in the turn lane. They were first in line. But, the cars coming into the market from the other direction (from Pahoa), were so constant, and the line at the entrance was moving so slowly, that they sat there for a good 10 minutes. I didn't go, as I was bailing out a stranger that had his Honda Ruckus break down on the highway right at Shower. I was headed to Hilo on my scooter for a workout at my gym, when I saw the broken down Ruckus on the side of the highway. I stopped to see if the man needed help, and he did. I called the wife and asked her to bring the Toyota pickup home ASAP, as I needed to use it to load up John's (the former stranger that I got to know a bit) Honda Ruckus and take it to his house in Hawaiin Acres. By the time I got his scooter loaded in our truck, he said he had sat there for 2 1/2 hours. I also brought him some ice water. Then I almost got lost trying to get myself back home. My sense of direction sucks.

Or "Congratulations, you just went to a local farmers market and bought your food locally". It doesn't have to be about saving a buck....

The pahoa market just serves a different type of folk.

Congratulations, Maku'u Market, you have now established the precedent for charging for parking. We here on the Big Island are tethered to our cars. We have no choice but to drive to everything. From now on, we will drive, perhaps long distances, only to arrive at a venue and told we have to pay to park. The charge may not be only a dollar and the 'cause' for the charge may not be so benign. Alas, now everyone with an event will see the parking as another revenue generator. Nickel-and-dimed to death. Thanks a lot, Maku'u Market.

The Maku'u farmers Assc. have grown the market into the best venue on the Island. I'm confident that they will continue to grow; including their planned Cultural Center.

Performing arts, youth activities, community activities, and many other uses that we haven't yet imagined. I certainly don't begrudge the MFA for wanting to make it more than just a Farmers Market.

I hope everyone here, including the detractors, eventually enjoy the services brought about by these visionary Hawaiians.

Come on people, They're not getting anything at gunpoint. If you want to help; enjoy the market and throw them a buck. If not, go to the next best venue.

Either way, I'm sure the MFA will invite everyone to the opening.

Hence, the "tailgate party" atmosphere from people carpooling to the market and people watching while waiting for the rest of the pool to finish shopping. Might as well get extra "entertainment" for your dollar. If you go, ask your elderly neighbor if they need anything. They may not have the money to spare for the fee, and too proud to ask. Or just buy it if you can, and leave a gift basket. The fee is for a good cause though. Hope future Community Center instills local history and legend in their architecture and curriculum to keep history alive, and just not a big lanai for corporate mainstream events.

Are you a human being, or a human doing?

Tink, I think that's the nicest thing I've read on punaweb in a long time.

There is no public transportation to speak of on this island (esp. on Sunday). We HAVE to drive. Everywhere. We show up with our cars. No choice. if we want to go anyplace, the car comes with. NO choice. And now we have to pay to store the car while we spend money at their very profitable venue? for the "privilege" of shopping? Maku'u has now made itself a privilege. What is right about that?

You HAVE to go to Maku'u? Seriously?

I'm still waiting to see the traffic study from DOT, since it's a required part of having a driveway on the highway, and a re-evaluation can supposedly be triggered by change of use (or complaint).
