Early steam engines of all kinds tended to explode spectacularly because they didn't have pressure release valves, that is why the bottom of the Mississippi River is littered with the remains of steam boats the blew up and burned. Engineers invented the pressure release valve that was used on all later steam engines and they quit blowing up, they were used for manufacturing and transportation for decades after that, in fact some of the early cars were also steam driven. Steam is still used all over the planet, the question is just what the power source is to create the steam: nuclear, coal, solar, geothermal, or oil.

Could even use the methane produced at the dump to produce electricity.

Tink, I know some studio glass artists in North Carolina who have tapped the land fill in Asheville to fire there kilns. They say that their glory hole burns hotter and more consistant with the methane than with nat gas and it free.

Super interesting tangent, guys, but can we get back to the topic of this thread?

RE: Recent flow activity - cwoods61 - 07-06-2014

Isn't every thread supposed to stray off topic, turn into a flame war, or both? :-)

They always seem to wander. As far as the flow "a watched pot never boils". Pele does what Pele does. Keeps life interesting, doesn't it?

It's closest to Hawaiian acres which is the largest forested and agricultural district . No wonder HA has begged for a new fire truck while lower puna gets it's 6 th new one . Like HPP right between keaau and Pahoa don't need one . . They going to let HA burn down , and They should be paying their fire truck first .! What are they doing ? They going to try pissing on the fire with a 250 gallon old fire truck ? . County doesn't honor any agreements . It will burn the forest before any lava comes . HA is next to flow . To bad they still use the old maps out of proportion . It's smoking and The smell of the forest burning and smoke is to G road . Having the only forest reserve left you can bet the will let HA burn .

"Isn't every thread supposed to stray off topic...?"

I like to think of thread tangents like the prize in the Cracker Jack box. The package says Cracker Jack, and you know you're going to get Cracker Jack, but sometimes that little prize made your day.
