I've not paid any surcharges yet having things delivered from Walmart, whether local delivery or shipping service. I haven't encountered the $35 minimum, either, tho I have seen it from Target, even with membership, but that amount generally isn't onerous to handle by-and-large.
Your package's journey matches so very many I had started to deal with on Amazon that finally caused me to tell them to **** ***.
Used to be everything came Priority (yeeeeeah, that much-vaunted "Free 2-day delivery with Prime" that ceased to be true), then that became "Parcel Select" and slowed down even more, and then they started using the dreaded "Ground Advantage".
The long tail tale:
The straw that broke the camel's back for me was an item I ordered for my dog that was injured the end of May arrived in 3 days, but was too large. I promptly initiated an exchange and suddenly it was going to take 5 days to arrive "Parcel Select", then suddenly switched to "Ground Advantage" with an estimated delivery date of JULY 11 (yes, *JULY*.)
I contacted customer support and my language was...colorful (and sponsored by the letter F***). They refunded me (least they could do) and presumably the item will never arrive anyway, since now tracking stalled in Las Vegas as of June 8.
Meanwhile, I found the same item on Walmart for 1/3 less than Amazon and got it UPS in 3 days.

It used to be I could add a verboten item to the cart but then when I tried to check out the red text of shipment death would say to choose a different address. Now those items are just shown as "unavailable" so they can't go to the cart unless I change delivery address to somewhere on the madland first. Presumably they did this because making it look like it was unavailable uses less customer support time than somebody trying to get something in their cart to ship.
https://www.sportsmans.com/ ships to Hawaii. Items under $75 (or whatever) have a reasonable charge but items over that ship for free.

I have noticed the "currently unavailable" on Amazon for some items instead of "can't ship to HI" and wondered if it was just a ploy, instead of just flat-out saying they wouldn't ship here. Even tho one of the 50 states yadayada.
Example:
My elderly folks on the mainland recently bought a nifty little rechargeable battery-powered 4-wheel scooter with baskets...about $450; not cheap-cheap, but pretty much what they needed at a good price for them. Got it in 2 days where they live. I looked up the listing just to check out the specs and such..."Currently Unavailable" here.
Riiiiiight.

terracore, for example I used to order 100Ah+ LiFePO4 and large memory foam mattresses, now they are "unavailable". Thanks for the sportsmans.com site, good to have options. I had a chuckle at the sale on the 22LR in tacticool black, over half of which was M-LOK. :-)
punikahakaiferret, thanks, I haven't tried ebay for a while. And "unavailable" is definitely a ploy, especially on items without lithium batteries! At least if they'd be honest up front and have a reasonable surcharge for some items it would still be useful. When someone on-island is charging $2000 for something that's $500 with mainland Amazon, I might spend a few hundred for shipping...

What amazes me is that the A that shall not be named doesn't see dollar signs in there somewhere. Ain't their's the squeeze a buck out of a rock kind mindset? And meanwhile, I imagine, all sorts of sales ain't happening because of this issue, and their computers must know it. One would think AI could figure that out.
I've been avoiding A for a long while now.. it's hard to support fascism... and eBay has proven to be pretty good..
One shipping alternative I haven't tried yet, but saw going by so bookmarked them for future reference.. is Ship to Hawaii..

When batteries are involved, especially lithium, they and items that contain them generally can’t be shipped USPS as even Ground Advantage gets sent by passenger plane sometimes. If sent by FedEx or UPS, cargo only planes, the shipping cost is higher. They could provide a FedEx or UPS option, but don’t. Even Amazon planes are cargo to Hawaii, then handed off to USPS, but they still prefer not to send batteries.
There’s probably a legal liability issue, or algorithms telling them something, but who knows what’s behind the decision?

Is the image in your post above a copy from the Costco delivery guy’s notice? I’ve seen a few that he posted on various public facebook groups, but not that one. The ones I’ve seen are photos. With his business name but not personal name.
