RE: Have you bought any gas lately? - loffelkopffl - 05-21-2026 where's the oil stolen from Venezuela? RE: Have you bought any gas lately? - kalakoa - 05-21-2026 Venezuelan oil is a heavy crude better suited to manufacture of asphalt and other uses; it requires expensive extra refining to make gasoline. RE: Have you bought any gas lately? - Obie - 05-23-2026 Sorry Durian Fiend, I was asking Kalakoa how his cybertruck is doing. He posted this 5 years ago "02-24-2021, 11:18 AM 4 hours with 3300 watts If 13.2KWh is a full charge, that's either a golf cart or an EV that's only been to the corner store and back. Guess I'll find out when the Cybertruck ships." "Venezuelan oil is a heavy crude better suited to manufacture of asphalt and other uses; it requires expensive extra refining to make gasoline.' American oil companies built refiners in the US to refine Venezuelan crude. The Chevron's oil refinery in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the company's largest operation in the US. can refine 350,000 to 400,000 barrels per day. RE: Have you bought any gas lately? - terracore - 05-24-2026 Venezuelan oil practically is asphalt. It is known that the USA, China, and India has the capability to make other things out of it through a process called cracking. (others can but not in quantity) It requires lot of inputs that are derived from sweet light crude. The US refineries buy oil from Venezuela and sell them the light distillates they need to make gasoline from their own oil. At least they did, AFAIK Venezuela has to import most of it's gasoline because their refineries are in such bad condition. A lot of the "friction" between the USA and Venezuela is that US oil companies spent billions of dollars investing in Venezuela and in building US refineries specifically for their thick sour oil between the 80's and 90's, then around 2006 Hugo Chavez kicked them out. "If 13.2KWh is a full charge, that's either a golf cart or an EV that's only been to the corner store and back." Or a plug-in hybrid. The main objective of a PHEV is an EV range equal to about a gallon of gas, with the understanding that most people put less than 37 miles per day on their car. Ours has a ~18kWh battery, of which about 16 is available (Toyota's BMS reserves a portion of the battery when the vehicle is new so that the range doesn't decrease as the battery ages until it gets through the 10 year warranty period). It's rated for 42 miles, but most people in warmer climates get closer to 50. This is about the maximum range one can expect with a modest DIY off grid solar setup on the east side of Hawaii. One could do better on the Kona side. RE: Have you bought any gas lately? - kalakoa - 05-26-2026 No, I never ended up getting that Cybertruck. It was tempting for the specs and ship date as announced, but here and now, it would be fine for trips to Walmart but it wouldn't quite have the range to reach Boston. RE: Have you bought any gas lately? - Durian Fiend - 05-27-2026 HOUSTON/NEW YORK, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Oil refiners on the U.S. Gulf Coast are struggling to absorb a rapid surge in Venezuelan crude shipments since last month's flagship $2 billion supply deal between Caracas and Washington, pressuring prices and leaving some volumes unsold, according to traders and shipping data. Trading houses Vitol and Trafigura were granted U.S. licenses to market and sell millions of barrels of Venezuelan oil following the U.S. operation and a subsequent supply agreement with interim President Delcy Rodriguez. The trading houses, which joined energy major Chevron (CVX.N), opens new tab in holding approval to export Venezuelan oil, struck several early deals to sell some cargoes to refiners in the U.S. and Europe. However, with Chevron also raising exports quickly, the trading companies are now finding it harder to secure enough buyers among Gulf Coast refiners, traders said. "We're all facing this issue where there's more to place and not enough takers," one of the traders said, citing reluctance from U.S. refiners to buy Venezuelan crude. Some refiners are complaining that prices, albeit declining, remain high compared to competing Canadian heavy grades..." RE: Have you bought any gas lately? - randomq - 06-19-2026 Huh, our gas got more expensive, and then dropped less than the mainland, again... RE: Have you bought any gas lately? - Obie - 06-20-2026 Dropping fast in Ohio, it's $3.14 in the Cincinnati area. RE: Have you bought any gas lately? - randomq - 06-20-2026 LOL, it went *up* in Hawaii today, $5.57 average. |
