Yes, it is disgusting, our own government using our communities (and those worldwide) as "dumping grounds" in order to pump cash into Wall Street and their banks. What's worse is the the atmosphere of public apathy that keeps this stuff going, imho. But then, consistency's the thing and those who don't learn from history, ect., ect.Well, the sunshine is back and we're in Puna so fair dinkem, I'd say.**S**

LeeE, I believe it's more public fear than apathy. Fear that's based upon government power and control. Fear of speaking freely, even though we have the Constitutional right to do so. Fear of arrest. Fear of being "watched". Fear of losing your job. Most of these fears are unfounded but that doesn't seem to matter because media-induced fear and ignorance overrides logic.
To be fair, our government shouldn't be singled out. It's all governments because government, by nature, is a dominating entity and it's in their best interest to keep its citizens afraid. One way to do this is to make crazy laws, and then enforce them with thug-like precision regardless of the social costs. The "War on Drugs" is a prime example.
There's a documentary called "Grass". It's a Lion's Gate Production that's narrated by Woody Harrelson. Watch it.

Ditto that. I know many people are afraid to speak out against govt. policies, whether local, national or international. Basic Chomsky stuff. But then, Chomsky's never lived in Puna, where emoting is rarely out of style.
When I check out the articles on mapinc.org, I see that change is in the wind, if not in the White House. Did you see Barney Franks on Bill Maer this week? He's worth hearing and is putting forward legislation to move things forward.

As far as Obama walking his talk and allowing progress on the state and local levels goes, I'm as disappointed as most progressives are with him. It'll happen nonetheless.

LeeE, I caught Barney on Bill Maher. My problem with getting excited is that I can't take the guy seriously. It's my loss but then again, I'd rather be pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed because false hope sucks.
I have a problem in believing that weed can be used for treating of Avian and Swine flu, if for no reason other than it sounds nuts.
Haven't seen Humbolt County but based upon your recommendation, I'll be sure to catch it the next time around.

Interesting, some crazy gang-style nonsense today in Kea'au while I'm doing laundry, posturing, cars and handguns in the parking lot. It will be interesting if it makes the news. The cops were there for an hour and half at least.
Hope to not see more of that kind of thing.
