Once a sovereign nation, the people who initially occupied these Islands are now an underclass. They suffer more poverty, homelessness, disease (specifically incidents of breast cancer), and poor education than any other ethnic group here.

UNDERCLASS??

May be from the point of view of a retiree with a nice life ("egg nest" or whatever ).

I work with them ,hear every day how they have free housing and all kinds of government help.
That is those who want to work.I know some (and not just one or two) pure bred Hawaiians who don't work and looks like don't plan too. They get a government check, work for cash and use the government money to buy luxury stuff.Sure, not all of them.I know those who work full time and work hard, but - UNDERCLASS?
I can tell you who is underclass here.
For those who don't have to worry about losing the job and the only house you have -you worked hard, invested smart and deserved all that view and vacation rental you have next door.Sure you have the right to
talk about underclass and poor Hawaiians. But you don't know what UNDERCLASS is.

Ah yes, the poor misunderstood and downtrodden caucasian who has never as a group taken a government check. You know, Alex, I won't even dignify this highly prejudiced and bigoted statement with an answer. And please don't assume you know anything about me.

It seems like you assumed a lot already .And don't "dignify" with an answer because you don't have one.

This WAS an interesting thread until it slipped into the old cliche of..you can make fun/rant/complain about the "american/ middleclass/white/haole/military, etc"...but if do the same about any other "race/colour/ethnic, etc"... than we pull out the bigot/prejudice card.
There is an old saying from middleschool days..."if you can't win the debate, attack the debater". Listen to any a.m. talk show and you will see the same thing. enjoy.

Yeah, we get some middle school antics from time to time. Joey called me a name.... Timmy pulled my hair so I slugged him back. Mary is being mean.

I do appreciate that the vast majority of our members abstain from this stuff.

Assume the best and ask questions.

I will say this on the subject:

The "Hawaiian native people" some are talking about with their rights and whatever, need to wake up and smell the coffee. The Military isn’t going anywhere. The Whites are not going anywhere. Hawaii will remain a State of the United States and will never be given back to the people. You will never have your kingdom back.

Do you fight and fight a losing battle over nonsense or do you look to your indigenous native brothers and sisters on the mainland and artic and decide to capitalize on what you do have?

No NA community on the mainland ever expects that tall their lands and ways will ever be given back to them. They don’t expect any more rights and privileges than what has already been given. They have come to peace with the status of their people. So, fight a fight that goes nowhere, or open up a Casino and get your land's value back a dollar at a time?

Don’t bring a knife to a missile war, bring your lawyers! One NA community on the mainland was opposed to a military live fire training facility being built right along their community border. For 20 years they have been fighting this and for 20 years the range was moving forward. They had no voice in the matter so why waste the energy and five years ago they stopped fighting. But, the day the military came asking for permission to build electrical and water lines across their land for use by the range, the NA lawyers placed a lease arrangement on the military’s desk; $650,000,000.00 for a 25 year access lease, non negotiable, revocable if the military screws things up. Now who has the power?

Instead of wasting energy on all this nonsense, pour it all into passing the Akaka Bill. Once you have that, you have rights. Without it, your just a disgruntle voice. You can try and fight and lose using your ways, or you can fight and win using their ways!

You haven't looked at the casino battles going on. [Smile]

Edited to add a smilie.

Rob, just so I understand, you and Riverwolf are saying it's not okay for me to call someone I see making a blatant bigoted
statement, such as, "These Hawaiian people are taking a government check, still working for cash, and buying luxuries"? This kind of thing offends me deeply especially in the context of this conversation. But this is your living room. If that is the case, I'd appreciate the clarification so I can move on if need be.
Thanks

Those who take advantage of the system come from all different colors, races, and even class. Many do it simply because they can. If HI were to revert back to Kingdom, sure there will be some who will probably cry and moan because they'll no longer have their shiny trucks and spam, but they'll probably have less heart disease and diabetes from imported U.S. junk foods also, so it balances out. Most of us will need to either become sustainable, or leave.
