Kalakoa,

Making sure Michelle is working well is important to maintaining UKIRT's scientific productivity. It's vital for studies of solar system objects and orbital debris, which is now a large part of UKIRT's mission these days. As for scientific productivity being a good argument to keep UKIRT operational, I would agree but it's clear right now science is not the reason UKIRT was chosen to be decommissioned. To have politics interfere with good science is always frustrating and quite difficult to fight, but the decision will be fought.

Opihikao,

More than happy to give you and a couple of family members a tour but my schedule over the next few months is pretty crazy, so this might not be possible until well into the new year. I hope that still works for you.

(BBM) Yes, indeed, Sir. Disgusting.

Mahalo for your continued offer. We shall cross paths one day, perhaps not on Mauna Kea, but over a beer or a fine glass of wine, when Pam returns, in celebration.

Aloha to you, Sir.

JMO.

Thank you for always thinking of me Smile. I left a part of my heart in Hawaii from my very first visit as a child. Hoping one day I can go back. And I pray the beautiful culture and language will be preserved for forever.

Pam in CA

"Against the majority of PW that can't keep focus on a topic beyond the OP, it looks like the "work", or more specifically, site leveling isn't going to start back up until next spring. The night temperature is dropping fast, so snow at the summit is probably not far off."

Surely you mean the night time average temperature is slowly changing from just above the freezing point to roughly freezing? The rapid changes tend to occur at sunset at all times of the year. Always a challenge to handle conditions in order to get good image quality, but the experts have found a way. What's your preferred way to handle focus and seeing changes at that time of the day? I'm sure I can learn something from you.

Makes you wonder why heavy engineering still happens at the observatories during the winter, but what the hell do I know? You're the expert.

"Having observed the short attention spans in south Puna for over 4 years now, by next spring, this will be another issue going from causing the imminent and horrible death of thousands through cancer and poison, to most people on Pahoa village road not remembering what TMT stood for. That will be at the same time all the people watching will be occurring, as Leilani, Nanawale, Kalapana, Seaview, et al are detoured through "downtown" Pahoa village."

Perhaps I'll remind you of this prediction next spring and see if you share that same short attention span. You know what, I think I will. It'll give me enough time to decipher what you wrote. "All the people watching will be occurring"?

This *thread* has been active for a half a year already, and I suspect it will still be alive next spring.

No doubt, VI. In the meantime, I believe there is still a responsibility for some of us to counter misinformation. It's a shame that's needed, because those who post crap obviously don't feel they have that responsibility and continue to make stuff up. As long as that keeps happening, the thread will continue in perpetuity.

The good thing is that people are learning, including myself, to ignore the more obvious trolls, which definitely means less clutter.

An interesting take on the issues surrounding Mauna Kea and the observatories: http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2015/10/what-makes-a-volcano-sacred/413203/

Thanks 4 sharing the link rider. This super TMT observatory project is no better for our island than the already built super ferry in my opinion.
Why are these big dollar tourism projects failing here in Hawaii?

My keiki don't seem to miss the super ferry, not sure about this TMT.
When was the last big project built for our islands kids? Maybe Walmart? Or the county building? Resort? Golf course? Geothermal wells? County parks? Super ferry? Rail? Ohia wilt? EBT or P-cards? Police stations? Bed and breakfast vacation rentals? Cress theaters?
It would be some kind of different, to see any investments towards keiki fun and learning experiences in these parts. Even another tiger at the zoo would make a difference for some of our local keiki?

Our state continues to take resource's from today and tomorrow's island keiki, while building or development continues for tourism and pensions for the chosen. Jmo.

How old your keiki ? Pretty big leap from Super Ferry to keiki don't you think ?

Oh and they are "failing" BC of a <% few, small minded idiot's flaunting. .. apologies Rob and Opihikao.

Of course, there are various, structured, swimming, paddling, soccer, baseball, football, tennis, golf, museum programs etc., etc here. Not to mention the near unlimited opportunities to immerse and teach keiki of all ages about our world. ... Just takes an involved parent to get them in. ... And what is more important than that Gypsy ??? Ask them .. Everything is what you make it and teach for keiki ... That is how they grow and learn.

Not sure the "last",,,,, but a good one is the "Superstation" as my little guy likes to call it up Mauna Kea ... Check it out sometime Gypsy and let us know what your kids think of it vs. the Super Ferry.

Come on Tom ! I want to hear some Irish slang on this thicko skanger ... But keep it Hawaiian .. LOL.

C-mon pineapple, orange, guava juice man. Really, asking others like your butt buddy Tomk to chime in on your self sponsored put down parade? Your to laZzy to write your own dribble down half the time? Try sometime to think about others rather than yourself. I do feel sorry for your keiki, hopefully you have not contaminated him or her with your self centered hatred of others POG!

Yes having good parents involving their keiki in most anything is always a plus or positive. Although having locally affordable fun or educational opportunities doesn't hurt the cause either.

P.S. How is Pua ___ spending that hard earned $150,000 dollars, that was taken from the kids hawaiian football program?
How is that 9 million dollar Tomosato gym holding up? Can the keiki use it for dances and fun functions yet, or is it only for the faculty to decide use and schedule?

Half those things you mentioned pog are not offered here in one of the fastest growing parts of Hawaii, "pahoa". Soccer teams? Golf? Swimming team? Museum programs?
Where is the teen dance, arcade room, waterslide, clay Pidgin's, bike lanes, hobby shops, talent shows, parks without homeless left needles, skating rink, ice or meth free pizza places, ice cream shop, laser and paint gun range's. Thats just a few fun things that could help keiki around these parts pass time. Thee pawn shops and walls in front of businesses get boring quickly to some. At least the streets here in Puna are safe, right Pog?

Sorry a few more unintelligent spelling errors may come with this message!

I agree. It's a shame that all those traditional Hawaiian cultural activities you listed have been stopped. Obviously, the TMT should be stopped. No more golf, water slides, ice skating or paint ball ranges? Horrors. It's desecration. Something must be done.
