Yeah, we little bugs in comparison to nature, earth, Pele, ain't gonna stop nothing.

And what gets my goat is, Pele spew herself on Kapaho all because the locals were giving a couple houles a hard time while trying to integrate themselves into the neighborhood..

Pele don't like bugs, the likes of us, arguing and bickering about who can live where.. So, she just take everything away, nobody get nuten.

I don't think people should rely on civil defense to guide them out of natural disasters. What the county does (and rightly so) is to incourage people to be prepared for incidents that are certain to occur. Hurricanes, earthquakes, and lava are going to happen. If highway 130 were to be blocked, a better option than fleeing would be having the recources to stay for a week or two, while the county does what it can to react to the situation.

Good and bad news,, observations that is.. It does appear in this photo that the flow has found a down hill direction which should send it south.. It looks as if it is finished going around the crater and there's a down hill southern direction it can follow.. Bad news for the Kalapana area providing it does continue in this direction... especially it's one of my favorite areas in Puna..

HVO's recent photo..

The new detailed map almost makes it look like a coin toss, though, as to which side of the rift zone it will flow.

Straight ahead of it is essentially a "hill". If it even veers a little to the left, that sends it in a Pahoa direction. If it veers a little to the right, that sends it in a Kalapana direction.

Too early to say, which is why the USGS is saying nothing. Maybe Flossie will come dump enough rain to put it out... (haha)

Right now you can see the glowing red river very well...

Thanks for the alert Glenn. This is a very impressive image!

By the way.... your handle, Glennoid always makes me think back to my old anatomy classes- the glenoid fossa. Maybe a title for a book or a Dave Barry pickup band. S'ok... I'll get over it. Better than Capt. Dave, Eaglescout. lol, I hope you are.....

I absolutely disagree with you! Harry Kim was one of our best Civil defense directors. So our civil defense is probably one of the best prepared in this state for a natural disaster. Many know that he was a cautious / conservative CD Director. He would issue warnings in advance of what our then mayor Steve Yamashiro wanted.

Harry didnt want to be mayor to get a picture taken. He was fed up with the county and wanted to make positive changes.

And remember he has a house here down around the corner.

I was on the Mauna Loa Strip Road yesterday and could see Pu'u O'o smoking, as well as the area where the current flow is burning. It's not as helpful as looking at a map but it's interesting to get that overall panorama.

Why do I feel like I am watching a 1950's Japanese monster movie? Flossie Meets Pele.
