RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - geochem - 04-25-2019 This calls to mind a, perhaps fictional, story of a university president's speech that began: "We used to be a state-funded university, then we became a state-supported university, then a state-tolerated university; it looks like we are now to become a state-exploited university..." I think the unstated agenda here is to increase the funding to OHA: if the University were to lease space to the telescopes for cash, then OHA gets a 20% cut of that cash off the top. With the telescope time used by the UH, in lieu of lease rent, OHA gets cut out of the equation and they don't like that... The arrangements with many of the telescopes, of course, pre-date OHA - but that doesn't matter... RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - leilanidude - 04-25-2019 OHA - We stick our hand into everything... RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-25-2019 OHA - We stick our hand into everything... And funny - - how audits and investigations show a little bit of everything sticks to their hands. RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - TomK - 04-25-2019 "TomK - you need to get that information on the lease payments, to Kahele and other representatives, who probably do not understand it." They've been made aware of this many times. It's conveniently ignored. RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - PaulW - 04-25-2019 https://www.civilbeat.org/2019/04/the-canary-islands-seems-like-an-ideal-site-for-the-tmt/ At first I thought: just another typical rant at that sad excuse for a news site, but you get to the bottom and he claims to be a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Manoa! Just another non-Hawaiian being outraged on behalf of Hawaiians and completely misunderstanding the situation (he has suggestions about where else "we" could spend that $1.4B). I should also check my bible, I didn't know Mary tempted Jesus! RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - randomq - 04-26-2019 That opinion piece was so ignorant; I *hope* he's not really a professor at UH Manoa. If he is, that university must be hurting... RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - geochem - 04-26-2019 Sorry to say that the University is not immune to hiring politically correct, sanctimonious idiots any more than any other State agency - and may be a little more prone to - if my experience is any measure. RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-26-2019 I should also check my bible, I didn't know Mary tempted Jesus! PaulW- I believe the author of the Civil Beat opinion piece was referring to the fictional novel and later film by Martin Scorsese, 'The Last Temptation of Christ.' And just as the Civil Beat author bases his misinformed understanding of Christianity on a movie, he formulates some of his argument against the TMT with equally fictional sources for the Hawaiian religion. He's supposed to be an engineer. I hope I never get near anything he's built or designed. "God has cared for these trees, but he cannot protect them from fools." - John Muir, 1897, arguing for the protection of our forests RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - MarkD - 04-26-2019 " I hope he's not really a professor at UH Manoa." - - - - Academics in particular excel at this type of propaganda. Author employs the usual emotional constructions: "every unholy trick to disempower people....persisted in brushing-off the worshippers’ positions....robbery in broad daylight....the depths for the damned are limitless...has reached abhorrent depths...." What a crock. RE: Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians - dan d - 04-26-2019 Engineers are theoretical. Mechanics and builders do HPP |
