If you are not aware of how EV ratings are made

My car gets fairly close to actual mileage on Kona, or Volcano round trips, set at the highest regen level, #4.  You can also drive Hamakua route to avoid Saddle Road, with the added benefit of Malasadas at Tex’s.

Watch out for people unplugging your car!!!

Not sure if this is available on all EVs, but my Kia has an option to lock the charger in place until I tap unlock with the key fob or either front door unlock buttons.

You would think it'd be a no-brainer to have charging stations at the Mauna Kea recreation area.

One would think, but this is Hawaii.

...a single 63-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery option the company expects will provide around 205 miles of
range.

My very first car that my father bought me when I graduated High School and went off to college in 1975, was our next-door neighbors 1973 2 Door Ford LTD. It had a 460 V-8 with a 22-gallon gas tank and at best got 9 MPG which would have given me a range of 198 miles. You could literally watch the gas gauge go down just by starting the car.

At least Costco has multiple gas pumps.

I had a ‘76 FJ40 with a 10 gallon gas tank under the front passenger seat-from the factory. At best it got 10 mpg, so those multiple pumps at Costco would be essential.

Yes they should have more EV charging stations and it’s an excellent idea to have a couple at the recreation area at top of the Saddle.

charging stations at the Mauna Kea recreation area.

The county leased space on the property for a food truck or snack bar, so there’s precedent.

Did they put it in front so you could fill it on the go?

It's an interesting approach for sure, able to fill in that missing small truck option (even comes with door window handcranks! which takes most of us back) and can be styled anywhere from a 1960's F100, to a Retro Ranger, to a Suburu Baja with the small open back but with racks (not everyone needs a tactical assault suv).

Unfortunately, it doesn't ship to Hawai'i (maybe shiptohawaii.com can forward it along? ;) and instead you have to deliver it to a California port and have Pasha bring it the rest of the way (apparently only they handle EVs?)

Once you price in the customizations (tons of options, but also to the level of if you want speakers, that'll cost you), and the freight charges, it may only be a pretty fringe item (like the Hilo Hattie's style Cybertruck - perfect for the couple who wants that noxious blend of "Hawaiiana" and buying into Elon Musk's products ;)

RE: Your carbon footprint in Hawaii - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 06-27-2026

Of course, they don’t ship to Hawaii.

Instead, we can buy a small 25 year old legal Kei truck, not because it meets federal regulations but because it’s over 25 years old and therefore considered a “classic.”  Even though the steering wheel is on the right side.

And they are shipped internationally from Japan, not California so someone has figured that out.

Ha!   I prefer this method.   https://www.youtube.com/shorts/4qvzXIYjttQ

Unfortunately the FJ40 was filled from outside the vehicle like a modern car.
