So, you're trying to make a case justifying the singling out of individuals for the racist label? Anything can be taken to an extreme to suit a particular perspective. That extreme gets pretty scary beyond a certain undefined point. You guys are starting to scare me. Is it the gulag for those that don't speak or believe in your version of "correct" speech or thought? Or is it just expulsion from society? Or is this just a desire to purge punaweb of any dissenting thought?

Oink,

Relax. It just seems like you can't take the heat. Don't let your imagination carry you away. No one has been purged, edited, censored or banned. There are merely a variety of differing opinions.

Rob,
No heat. As far as I know none of the hate has been directed at me. If it was I wasn't paying attention and missed it. I didn't infer any overzealous action on your part in regards to editing, censoring or banning. As for the censoring or editing, I think you missed the boat by not taking action at the start of this thread. I know there is friction between Tom and you and you may sympathize or even agree with those holding views in opposition to his but what bothered me was the vicious personal attack on a person that went ignored by you the moderator. It was tacit approval on your part of the personal attack. I don't defend the original joke. If the joke is the issue then express displeasure with the joke: "Tom, I don't think your joke is appropriate. It could be taken by many readers as racist."

You just have to stir the ****, don't you? First of all, my reference to large dicks was a comment to a cartoon on Lack's site and had nothing to do with Punaweb or his joke here. Second of all, I was one of the first ones posting in this thread indicating I took his joke as such: a joke. I didn't have to go anywhere to "approve" it. In regards to Asian women, you can as well be labeled as a racist for your stereotyping remark. (BTW, I call my wife the "Long-Haired General!") Lighten up people and get a life!

RE: Disturbing, racist post - konadave - 01-02-2011

Rob,

The issue that I see here is that a racial (ethnic) joke was used as proof to attack The Lack by calling him a racist. If you look up racial (ethnic) jokes in wikipedia and look up racism you will see there is no relation to the two whatsoever. In order for Mauka to TRUTHFULLY call The Lack a "Racist" he has to have proof of hatred toward a race(s). Because that is how racism is defined and determined. Mauka has provided no proof whatsoever. The joke itself cannot be used as proof as hatred because by definition it is in fact, not racist.

These are the definitions that are used to determine things like Libel and Defamation of Character. Personally, I feel that The Lack has a pretty good case for a lawsuit. JMHO

Konadave,

The issue I see is that Tom was looking for some controversy, finally found it and is probably pleased as punch with his success. Cheap thrills.

RE: Disturbing, racist post - oink - 01-02-2011

So Rob, are you setting a precedent as to what level of personal attack is permissible, or does this latitude just apply to posts regarding Tom, for his pleasure of course.

RE: Disturbing, racist post - Rob Tucker - 01-02-2011

I have to disagree with you I guess. The discussion has primarily been about a remark, not a person, though some (you included) have apparently taken it as a personal attack.

Tom is a big boy and knows what he is doing when he is doing it. For my part I am willing to allow this all to proceed precisely because it has not been especially abusive or attacking an individual. The discussion seems to be about what some perceive as political correctness and others as racial insensitivity and all of this in the context of Hawaii for the most part.

So I am probably in a 'damned if you do and damned if you don't' position and have been placed here on purpose by someone we all know. So I will rely on my mantra of "assume the best". You can assume the worst if you so choose.

Assume the best and ask questions.
