This is a lovely custom for Memorial Day. If you google youtube lantern floating hawaii, there is a presentation of 2008 Memorial Day floating of the lanterns and an explanation of the days events that go into the evening and the launching of the lanterns.

Mella, I too love this concept. They got a lot of press on our local news and was sad that we did not have such a thing here. I would love to send off a lantern in honor of my mom, as I was not there when she died and really wish I could have said goodbye to her.
