I can't explain that logic but I also can't explain why Harry wouldn't ask the leaders of the protest to join the talks. If/when they refuse to meet, fine. Publicize it. It will cost them support among those willing to compromise. But not including them is another slap in the face and I think it will further alienate them and strengthen their resolve.

Why invite a group for talks who have already said they won't change their mind even if they're invited?

Why invite a group for talks

Kim didn't invite anyone from TMT either, so it's really not clear who "the leaders" are or how the discussions are supposed to be relevant. In other words, Standard County Procedure.

More like "holy sh$&, how are we gonna explain where da money went that we skimmed".

Many years ago someone (opihikao? Punafish?) on Punaweb described the Hawaiian way of meeting, and listening when discussing an issue.

Unfortunately I can’t find the exact source but I’ll try my best to describe from memory. Everyone involved gets together. Everyone is allowed to state their view and opinion on the issue. Everyone listens. Hopefully a resolution is reached.

If anyone has a more accurate description of the process, please post it.
From Kahuna’s comment above, I don’t understand how the Hawaiian way of discussing a problem can move forward without his participation.

From Kahuna's comment above

I don't see any way forward from "our thing is stopping TMT. No meeting, no conversation that he has is gonna change our mind", it's a pretty clear statement that "we will not allow TMT to be built".

TMT has been pretty clear: "Mauna Kea remains our first choice".

Neither Ige nor Kim has made any clear statement.

Taxpayers are clearly on the hook for the enhanced law enforcement costs.

What was that saying about an irresistible force meeting an immovable object?

Apparently it's no big deal because La Palma is almost as good.

Despite years of legal battles and months of protests by Native Hawaiian opponents, the international coalition that wants to build the world's largest telescope in Hawaii insists that the islands' highest peak -- Mauna Kea -- is the best place for their $1.4 billion instrument.

But just barely.

I think your right kalakoa...this from link https://www.staradvertiser.com/2019/08/25/breaking-news/hawaii-or-spain-telescope-experts-say-it-may-not-matter/

But John Mather, an astrophysicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006 for his work on the Big Bang theory, says there are other ways to get that data.

Mather, the senior project scientist for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, planned for launch into space in 2021, said the new instrument will be extremely effective at gathering infrared light. The atmosphere won’t get in the way of the telescope’s imaging capabilities because it won’t be on Earth.

Except the JWST has a limited lifespan of ten years or less and can't be repaired or upgraded once it's launched. It will also lack the resolution the TMT would be able to provide at infrared wavelengths on Mauna Kea. And it costs $10 billion.
