Thirty Meter Telescope officials acknowledge that their backup site atop a peak on the Spanish Canary island of La Palma is a comparable observatory location, and that it wouldn't cost more money or take extra time to build it there.

They're backpedaling. Publicly. Letting the protestors win.

The whole thing disgusts me.

Letting the protestors win.

...aannnnnddd your grand prize, behind door #1!
You can go home and sleep in your own beds again! Just like before this all started! What? What? No, nothing else. Nope sorry, not even a new mattress.

A no holds barred opinion piece from Pacific Business News:

https://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/news/2019/08/23/observatory-observations.html

"They talked about what was on their minds when they decided to suspend operations until they were assured of better access, and I’m glad they did. I’ve seen internet comments and social media posts from the anti-TMT side calling this decision an overreaction, even calling it propaganda meant to depict the protesters as violent.

Not at all. “Safety” meant a number of things, including the safety of staff working at high altitudes in the observatories. What if someone got injured or sick and their evacuation were to be delayed by the blockade? Safety also meant the safety of the protesters themselves. Driving through the crowds of protesters, including kids running around, is like driving down a crowded Waikiki sidewalk at a crawl, said Simons. Someone could get hurt when crowds and big SUVs mix.

It's not just $5 million or $10 million or $15 million or whatever the total number is that's now been spent on traffic control at the Mauna Kea Access Road. It's billions of dollars in research money that tax paying residents of Hawaii will lose:

Vassilis Syrmos, UH vice president for research and innovation, said the loss of the TMT, should it come to that, could mean the loss of billions of dollars in research funding for the university

The National Science Foundation is expected to decide its funding priorities for the next decade by the end of this year, and UH was expected to be positioned to receive billions for TMT-related astronomy research and instrumentation development, he said.

“If there’s no telescope, that funding goes somewhere else, ” Syrmos said.

https://www.westhawaiitoday.com/2019/09/11/hawaii-news/if-tmt-goes-billions-of-research-dollars-could-go-with-it/

It's an excellent article with a detailed breakdown of how and where funding for research projects is appropriated. Not the made up claims of "taking money from the keiki and the money could be better spent elsewhere."

Read the article. Blocking the TMT is what will take money from our keiki. And the money will be spent elsewhere. Like in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“A group of people served Mayor Harry Kim and other county officials last week with a “judicial summons” to appear before a September 23 “Hawaiian Kingdom Jural Assembly” to answer a “notice and demand for particulars.”

“Failure to attend may result in a warrant of arrest being issued,” the judicial summons stated.”

Some people spending too much time in fantasy land. Too bad it's costing us millions in taxes and economic benefits. If only there were some way to clear the road...

If only there were some way to clear the road

Closing Saddle Road without warning for a few days is the only non-violent way that will happen, but that would also impact a lot more people commuting to work.

RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - randomq - 09-15-2019

SBH, the protesters say they are non-violent. So what is violent about some police taking them peacefully to buses and down to Hilo for processing at the police station? There is somehow the implication here that police enforcing the law = violence!

“A group of people served Mayor Harry Kim ... to appear before a September 23 “Hawaiian Kingdom Jural Assembly” to answer a “notice and demand for particulars.”

I hope Harry shows up.
Then turns the tables on the "group of people" and demands some answers from them. If they try and leave, they'll find Hawaii County Police at the door who must temporarily and indefinitely keep the "group of people" inside for their own protection, perhaps due to an untraceable social media threat.

If nothing is accomplished at the meeting, perhaps HPD will find some oversize tires and too dark tinted windows in the parking lot.

RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - SBH - 09-15-2019

If they don’t close Saddle Road they will have to arrest a lot of people up there to clear MK Access Rd. All it takes is one person to lose their cool and the situation goes south real quick and there will be lots of videos posted on social media.
