"The WHO is still very clear on this - we do not need masks."

This is the "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one" argument. That only works unless you're the one. For those people who bought a limited personal supply of masks back in January when hundreds of millions of them were available, good for them. For the hospitals and policy makers who did absolutely nothing, shame on them.

When you start comparing the numbers: population, confirmed cases, where China and we're at right now, what's likely to happen, infection rates, etc., then add in who's running the show around here.
I'm guessing this may probably end up hitting the U.S. a lot harder than it hit China by the time it's done.
Which brings the thought:

Is this China's secret weapon for world dominance?
Given the Chinese political mentality, it's not a far fetched idea.
They may not have planned it.
But, Little doubt they'll see the opportunity.

Yes, good for them, not so good for the healthcare workers that are dying because of the lack of masks, lying unused in garages around the country.
I could've hoarded masks, toilet paper etc. I chose not to and I'm glad. If we let rationality guide our way, the world would be a better place.

we do not need masks

I don't think there is a one size fits all answer to the question of whether or not we should use masks but rather it is wholly dependent upon the conditions involved.

If the potential user happens to be strong, in good health, and otherwise is capable of practicing social distancing and good hygiene, right on, they are surely less likely to need one, especially in this time of there being a shortage.

But that assumes good health etc., whereas conversely someone like those with COPD may be way more vulnerable in that they are much more likely to have a bad outcome if they do contact COVID-19, and have already been advised by their doctors to wear one.

And then, even just now, in the last half hour in a conference call with Tusli Gabbard and several state officials when a caller asked what is the dangers of doing their laundry in a public laundromat the rep from Hawaii Health Systems said if you have to be in a space for that long he would strongly recommend that everyone, at any level age health etc., wear a mask. He didn't hem and haw.. it was clear. Wear a mask.

Ain't that always the case? I don't believe there is ever a one size fits all answer in nature. Every situation is unique. Why would this be otherwise?

I can see how a mask would be ineffective if worn improperly. Factor in that health professionals know how and the average civilian does not it may be pretty much true that masks help healthcare professionals but are wasted on us.

FWIW I bought a pack of 10 at the end of February. I may need them as my dad keeps going out on errands.

I've been off island for work since March 8th and have been reading many of the Coronavirus posts and threads. I'm well aware of the 14 day quarantine and reduced number of flights.
I'm currently working with a group of 16 in fairly close quarters. No way to distance ourselves 6 feet in our work area. We are wiping down work areas and diligent about washing our hands. So far, no one doing the type of work I am doing has been diagnosed with the coronavirus. There are roughly 200 of us working around the country during this time. This is my second inspection of our spring season. I have 2-3 more inspections to do before I can attempt to fly home to Hawaii. We have been provided with essential worker traveling papers so we can travel from job to job.

I hope everyone on Punaweb remains safe...time will tell.

- If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection.
- Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.

Not to beat a dead horse and all that, but considering the current subject of this thread, to wear or not to wear, I got a kick out of this article..

From: https://bklyner.com/no-mask-no-gloves-no-service-brooklyn-businesses-start-to-turn-away-customers-without-masks/

No Mask, No Gloves, No Service: Southern Brooklyn Businesses Start to Turn Away Customers Without Masks

Fong and Zhou Supermarket in Bensonhurst and AAA Pharmacy in Midwood are turning away customers who aren’t wearing face masks — a policy that a spokesperson from the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) says should not exist.

“Business owners are not permitted to turn away customers who are not wearing face masks,” said a spokesperson for the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS), although the spokesperson could not point to a specific law that prevents businesses from doing just that. Neither the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) nor the Office of Emergency Management (OCE) would comment on this practice...

As with so many things.. I suppose the marketplace is the real driver here.

If we, here in Hawaii, get to the full on in the wild outbreak with numbers doubling every three days and such I suspect more people will be wearing masks and other protective gear out of an abundance of caution. Or maybe because it's something they can do that allows them to feel they have a little control over their own lives..

Bad advice for a disease with contagious but pre/asymptomatic carriers.
