car infested with cockroaches! - nana valley - 09-03-2012

I researched Punaweb before I placed this new post about my topic. Any suggestions how to rid the SUV of cockroaches? [:0]
The car gets vacuumed monthly, I never leave food in the car. I do haul horse feed to a barn about once a month and the feed has to sit in the car 1-3 days before I get help to take it to the barn (a very heavy gate needs two people).
I did read about boric acid and will try to find some. Any other ideas would be welcome, of course.
Thank you in advance.

We have pretty good luck with roach traps when we get a roach invasion. We use the black cardboard ones, you have to bait them with the pheromone attractant and set them up so they access the sticky inside. I think the brand is HoyHoy.

I would stick them under all your seats after removing everything moveable like floor mats, seat covers, and carpet, then triple vacuuming under all the seats and everywhere you can get a vacuum into. If you don't get rid of any egg casings they won't really every go away.

Good luck, what a nightmare!

I really don't think you are going to be able to get rid of them yourself. If you leave just one cockroach (or one egg) after cleaning the SUV, the population will come roaring back.

I'd call an exterminator. I'll bet you are not the first to call about such a problem. They have de kine spray that will kill them. The stuff you get at HD often just won't do the job.

TRY TAKING A DOG FLEA COLLAR AND CUT IT UP INTO LITTLE PIECES AND PUT THEM IN THE CAR WHERE EVER YOU SEE THEM,THEY WILL LEAVE.

1)Bomb it, twice. It's been several years since I've done it but it can work. Try to get the bombs that work by heat and put out a smoke rather than a mist, if you can still get them. Use common sense with placement if using the hot type bomb {lift seat and put in pan on floor}. I'm sure burning up the car will get rid of the roaches but that's probably not what you had in mind. Wait the egg incubation period (?) and do it again. Health wise it might not be recommended but I've only had cancer once since I did it.

2)Leave you car parked at the Hilina Pali Overlook for a couple of days while you hike the trails and camp in the cabins. The ants will have eliminated the roaches in your absence, no kidding. Then politely ask the ants to leave.

Caution with the "bomb it" solution .... most insect bomb products have a caution AGAINST using in a vehicle....have seen the caution on both mist & spray products....

Caution with the ant solution... then what do you do with the ants???

The HoyHoy sticky traps are good, when used with other toxicants..., but like noted, ya gatta get every one of the buggas or just continue to use all of the available roach toxicants & traps... seems like once they are around, they are around...

I don't get cockroaches too often in my SUV but when I do I get combat. I buy the large ones (6pack) and put all of them in my vehicle. It does the job well. When I first got my SUV six years ago I had to put combat in it. Just the other day I saw a cockroach in it so now I am going to do it again. It doesn't stink like a bomb and you can put them under the seats and in the back. good luck!!

If you never leave food in the car then it's almost certainly from the horse feed. If so, there's no point in doing anything, except finding another way to transport the horsey d'oeuvres.

The only caution I would advise with all the "bait" type under the seat stuff is be careful if you go to Waimea and have heat on at all with the "feet" option (where it blows warm air down low instead of towards upper body).

Those things smell toxic as the heat warms them up so I am going to assume "heating" them releases toxins while driving.

This thread mentions WD-40, and boric acid as alternatives: http://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/54004/cockroach-infestation
