Air Conditioners - Cindy Blankenship - 03-30-2007 Does anyone know where the best buys are on air conditioners? I'm looking for one of the ultra quiet kind (for my son' room). A portable would be great but the ones I've seen are out of my budget - or recommendations for a handyman (since we don't know how to make the window shelf for one, and it's not an up and down type window). So far, I've checked Home Depot and on the phone, Wal Mart. Thanks! Cindy Cindy http://www.CoconutRoads.com RE: Air Conditioners - Beachboy - 03-30-2007 Cindy, your electric bill is gonna be sky high if you have an AC running 24/7. Plus, your son will never get use to the sub-tropical climate with an AC and will always be screaming to return to Oregon. But now this is where, I forgot who suggest it? Volcano comes in! The climate there in Volcano offers what I think is your best chances of being able to stay in Hawaii without your son putting up a fuss. It has a very cool climate with plenty of rain in which you'll never need an AC or the high electric bill that comes with owning one! Plus, your son just might find he will enjoy the outside there too. I think it's an awesome area. For me it's just to far to Hilo from Volcano on a daily basis. Give you an idea on the climate around Volcano Cindy. A lot of homes in that area have fireplaces! RE: Air Conditioners - macuu222 - 03-30-2007 We got ours at Sears. 5600 BTU is just perfect for one room. It keeps the room nice and cool and dry all day long. I think it was about $170.00 RE: Air Conditioners - Cindy Blankenship - 03-30-2007 Thanks Makuu ! I forgot we have a Sears. I was driving in circles looking for Costco the other day, and then I rememembered it's in Kona lol Anyway, Beachboy, thank you for trying to help. It sounds like you've read a few of my posts. In all fairness to my son, he does enjoy the nice weather here, but the thing is he's got supersonic hearing, and so he shuts his windows to sleep. And he sleeps at odd times. It doesn't really matter though, as we're moving into summer, it can get hot with windows shut even at night. And daytime is just way too noisy. Thank goodness I can wear ear plugs. We've talked about Volcano and plan to look at some rentals up there, but we pretty much decided that it's too far from our favorite beaches and swimming holes and that we enjoy the nice climate and don't miss the cold one bit. Plus I think the drive up can wear on the car's engine or transimission or something like that, and I have a used car. I find I often need a sweater at Volcano in the daytime. He's likely to just have the air on while sleeping when everything's close up. Makuu reminded me too that the air cond also works as a dehumidifier. His computer's all spread out on his closet floor - four hard drives, last count, so the dehumidifying is probably needed. And since I gave up baking years ago, and hang my clothes to dry outsides, we save on oven and dryer electric anyway. http://www.CoconutRoads.com RE: Air Conditioners - Carey - 03-30-2007 Cindy, another place to check is always Smith's Trading, they recondition appliances for resale. They are right next to KAPA radio, across from Fabric Warehouse, just down from WalMart at 21 Pohaku 961-0322. I called today, 'cause I know it is harder for you to call, they don't have any air conditioners at the moment, but they do get them in... also try craigslist at http://honolulu.craigslist.org/big/ they only have one right now in Hilo & it is a little $$$, but it does have or best offer ![]() Aloha, Carey RE: Air Conditioners - Cindy Blankenship - 03-30-2007 Carey to our rescue again :-) I just emailed the one on Craiglist and made an offer for a little less. It's out of our budget, but if it's a quiet one as stated in the specs, this would be perfect. I can make a puka in the window plug you helped us with for the exhause tube. He'll still have the large window to open when up. Thank you for making that call too! I may have a phone soon. My client had me sign up at Skype for the free phone call service (to those who have Skype), in preparation for some confercence calls, and they also have a fee based service for calling those who don't. It's really cheap. I've talked to California, with my headset and cable connection, and I'd swear I was on a regular phone. Thanks again, and keep your fingers crossed. on the portable:-) Cindy http://www.CoconutRoads.com RE: Air Conditioners - Beachboy - 03-30-2007 quote: you're right Cindy, had I read more than just a few of your post I might have realized that you already moved here...I fell like the village idiot right about now! ![]() RE: Air Conditioners - Cindy Blankenship - 03-30-2007 Beachboy - I'm sorry. I didn't mean it that way. When you mentioned my son might want to return to Oregon, I figured you'd read some of my posts. Which you have :-) But that's all I meant. No worries. I doubt any of us have time to read every single post. My son was born in Hilo, and then I took him to the mainland when was 3. Since then we've been back twice. Both times were sort of disasters. But now that I work remotely from home, freelancing, I can live here without job worries, and the relationship problem is history too. So I convinced my son to trust me, that it would be ok this time. It's been a little rough where we're staying due to noise issues, but he's being understanding. It's just that he's been sleep deprived a lot, and that's hard on both of us. But we're going to make it work this time. And this forum has been very helpful. Aloha! Cindy http://www.CoconutRoads.com RE: Air Conditioners - Cindy Blankenship - 03-30-2007 Does anyone know if our forum posts are indexed by search engines? If so, I shouldn't be using my real name as my user name because I do mention my son from time to time and if ran across a post while searching for a Hawaii topic in Google, he might be embarassed. I notice many of you use handles, and I just never though about it. Cindy http://www.CoconutRoads.com RE: Air Conditioners - Robin C - 03-30-2007 Hi, Cindy. I don't know the technical bits of the forum, but I did stick "Cindy Blankenship punaweb hawaii" into Google and your name pops up with the search page of the forums. I would say to do whatever you are comfortable with. I'm sure the forum would be fine with you being Cindy B or something else. Its the content not the name that matters. : ) Good luck with your A/C.
