Ocean Lots in Waa Waa - AKpilot - 09-07-2012
Hello all,
Quick question about the "oceanfront" lots in Waa Waa. I know about the 177th shares of the shore so that no one really has "oceanfront" property. But I remember reading that one of the oceanfront lots, or a sliver of one, was set aside in the 177th, as a kind of access. Anyone know if this is true, and where that lot is if it is true? I know "public" access to the shore at Waa Waa has been a little tighter as of late. Also, know anyone that lives on one of the ocean front lots in Waa Waa? Like it? I have been up and down Sadilek and Pakaka roads many times. But the only experience I have with the oceanfront area is that path down to the tidepools by Pakaka Rd.

there are a couple fishing trails that cut across from the Gov Road to the ocean there, with chains across small driveway like openings. One on north side is well known locally as the spot of the infamous Dana Ireland Murder 20 years ago that made national news....
that area is not that wide, only a few hundred feet to the ocean from the road, you can still find the old Kamehameha Hwy (foot trail), and canoe shelters along the coast there, and the plants are 90+% native unlike many spots along Puna full of Ironwood etc.
I have a friend that lives right on Gov Road there, and I visit often and walk that coast often, the area is quiet, sometimes many minutes go by w/o a car and the road is much nicer now that only a few years ago.
save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

Those lots are referred as spaghetti lots. I believe the maximum width is 99 feet. The community lot does exist, and it is privately owned by everyone in WaaWaa. It is not for public access, unless you own property down there, you have the right to walk through it for beach access. The coastline is under conservation and SMA regulations. Lots of money needed for archeological surveys, etc. Most lots have burial sites..

Yes, there's been a sudden reminder that fall isn't too far away here either. It's going down from about 86 during the day to around 84.

If you use google maps, the lots start to the south of the nanawale reserve. Turn off terrain and you will see the lots. You will see one lot before Pakaka road that looks like the one you are talking about. The map says roads but these aren't roads. That access lot is a foot trail, down to the water.

Nah, I've been up here a while. It is what will allow me to "live" in Hawaii! I love Waa Waa and Opihikao. Anyone here like to visit the tide pools in Waa Waa.
