It never rains but... - TomK - 06-05-2012 Well, just got back home to find my top freezer refrigerator had broken while I was away and all the food in it had spoiled and the house was rather smelly. Given everything that's going on at the moment I'm not sure I want to fork out on a new fridge right now and am sure a repair won't be cost-effective. I wondered if anyone had recommendations for a used appliance place where I might pick up a reasonably priced fridge/freezer? And just to double check, is the Pahoa transfer station still accepting old appliances (or is there another option)? Many thanks in advance. Tom http://apacificview.blogspot.com/ RE: It never rains but... - dmbwest - 06-05-2012 Sorry : ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWH3xzIL1lc aloha, pog RE: It never rains but... - macuu222 - 06-06-2012 Might want to try the recycle center at the Keaau dump for a used frig...otherwise you can get a new portable one at walmart pretty cheap. RE: It never rains but... - dwedeking - 06-06-2012 Smith's Appliances & Furniture 21 Pohaku St, Hilo, HI 96720 (808) 961-0322 Picked up a washer/dryer stacked combo from here and it worked fine. Prices seemed reasonable. http://www.wedekingphotography.com RE: It never rains but... - nana valley - 06-06-2012 I found this new listing on Craigslist. Best of luck finding a nice, inexpensive one. Now you have to fill with fresh groceries. I was very sorry to read about your discovery. http://honolulu.craigslist.org/big/app/3062301388.html RE: It never rains but... - TomK - 06-06-2012 Thanks, everyone, I appreciate your help. I bit the bullet and bought a new one from Sears - delivery Friday sometime. It was a question of potential dodgyness of a used fridge, my inability to transport one safely on my own (and dispose of the old one) and just not having the time to deal with the problem with so many other things going on right now. Anyway, thanks again! Tom http://apacificview.blogspot.com/ RE: It never rains but... - missydog1 - 06-06-2012 Tom, I certainly empathize. I have been there, smelled that. I still remember how stressful it was to have my huge frig die during my midterms in grad school. I had no time or money and the monster had to be taken down exterior stairs. Ugh! Some things can wait, but not the frig! It's really key to buy from someone who will take dead appliance away, so sounds like you did the best thing for you. Hope that is the last bit of bad fortune. RE: It never rains but... - TomK - 06-06-2012 Well, no, it doesn't seem to be the end of things unfortunately. My oven seems to have given up the ghost as well while I was away. Not that I had any food left to cook... Tom http://apacificview.blogspot.com/ RE: It never rains but... - missydog1 - 06-06-2012 OMG Tom. [:0] You need a home warranty all appliance package. For a few hundred, they will insure that all gets repaired or replaced with equal quality appliance. A couple years back, first my dishwasher crapped out and then a rodent killed my stove, and I had to replace them both, so I do know how much it sucks to have these big expenses hit in a wave. (my home warranty had lapsed, but they don't cover rodent damage anyway). Perhaps the oven is fixable. I will hope for you. RE: It never rains but... - nana valley - 06-07-2012 Wow, Tom...guess you better not leave next time! Maybe there is some nice person on Punaweb who will help you out with the stove. I wonder if you have wiring problems?? Power-surge that killed them? I would help if I had knowledge in that field. You're quite a "trooper" to come on here with a sense of humor over all this. |
