Elections Office - opihikao - 06-14-2012 Is our elections office ready for this upcoming election given the controversy? http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/sections/news/local-news/onishi-questioning-county%E2%80%99s-election-readiness.html Thoughts? RE: Elections Office - opihikao - 08-09-2012 I have no words for what's transpiring at our Elections Office. Good God. Apparently, as of today, a Hilo elections office staff member resigns. Then, Elections Administrator and one staff member of the Hilo Elections Div. (in charge of voter registration no less) are "out sick". WTH is going on? I'm very concerned about this. Now what? Do the Feds or State step in and handle this? For crying out loud, the primary is Saturday! Shaking my head. Thank you for allowing me to vent. RE: Elections Office - Carey - 08-09-2012 And 2 of the full time staff have called in sick for the remainder of the week.... Based on my only contact, trying to find out about our "pocket precinct" ballots, I would definitely say there is a general lack of communication, both within the county office & with the sate elections office... Granted this "pocket precinct" thing is new to the county/state.... but I was told repeatedly, by multiple employees, that the other office was handling our ballots (state or county - but the county WAS supposed to - would have been nice to be told by ONE of those employees, when I had called back & forth a couple of times, that they would check & get back to me, but both insisted the other office was handling it...) this was after the regular absentee ballots were mailed, & received by friends & such.... I emailed the attorney general & quickly got the answer from higher ups in BOTH offices.... strange to say the least - woulda been nice if the elections staff would have handled this "all by themselves", but that did not seem to happen...and the "pocket precinct" ballots were mailed a couple of days after that... still odd.. RE: Elections Office - opihikao - 08-09-2012 OMG, Carey. Beyond comprehension. Maybe, at this point, Yagong should do the honorable thing and recuse himself from the Chair position, and allow Vice Chair Pilago to take over. He's not running for office. Or, is this past the point of salvaging any credibility to this election, and too little too late? FYI, Keoki Kerr, Hawaii New8, did a report on this tonight, and will be investigating this further. What a mess! RE: Elections Office - csgray - 08-09-2012 I dropped my absentee ballot off after work today at the Aupuni location in Hilo. There was mild confusion on the part of the person I gave my ballot to about if they needed to time stamp it, and I sure hope the person who took it from her doesn't just lose it on her desk, since it didn't go into any kind of official sealed receptacle. That was a little disconcerting to say the least. They did try to recruit me to be a poll worker though. Carol RE: Elections Office - Seeb - 08-09-2012 Are there going to be workers at all the polls. RE: Elections Office - lquade - 08-10-2012 remember the days when the US would send staff to third world countries to make sure elections remained democratic! here we are right up to the primaries, first they send out the wrong ballots, close voting places, we asked for absentee as my husband travels and the ballet comes in less than a week of the primary so of course it cant make it two trips in the mail. then they close the kona elections office, and now the hilo office has staff out all week. NO secure container for the drop off ballots?? that is a new one...they always went into a wooden box that YOU dropped them in yourself. what is next? close the polls friday night??? RE: Elections Office - opihikao - 08-11-2012 FYI: Due to late opening of some voting sites, the Governor has issued a proclamation to extend voting time to 7:30pm: (*More at link) BREAKING: Abercrombie orders voting extension for Big Island polling places http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/19255474/abercrombie-orders-an-extension-of-hours-for-hawaii-island-polling-places Sigh... RE: Elections Office - opihikao - 08-13-2012 Well, we have our first request for recount from Lorraine Inouye, wonder how many more to come? If true, wonder how many ballots were in the truck that pulled into the County building (after final votes announced), and where were they from? What constitutes a "close enough" number to ask for a recount? What other races will be affected, if any, with this whole damn mess? Will the County Clerk still be working at week's end? What will the County Council do in the aftermath of the election and all it's problems, if anything? Will there be lawsuits to come? OMG, the thought of all this is...well, forget it. Going to listen to George Carlin.[] Unbelievable. Simply beyond comprehension. Mahalo for responses on this, not well versed in "How to recitfy a screwed up election". RE: Elections Office - Rob Tucker - 08-13-2012 I haven't seen the mess you speak of. When I voted it was smooth as silk. Another 43,000+ voted without difficulty it would seem. |
