Gyms - dayna - 06-21-2012

So everyone on here has been super awesome and helpful!

I'm looking to join a gym, one that doesn't have a lifetime membership type sign up.

I went by the YMCA and it was a bit dated and no showers are available during the day.

Any suggestions for Keaau area? I've been using the google and so far only finding gyms in Hilo. If that's my only option, I'll drive there but was hoping for something closer to Orchid Land.

So I'd love to hear from folks who are members of any gyms within driving distance.

Thanks again puna webbers!

I wish there were gyms in Puna. No such luck. I used to go to Spencer's in downtown Hilo, but the drive, the cost of gas and trying to find a parking place became too much. I bought a used home gym and do the best I can. Spencers, BJ Pemm, Aloha gym and the student gym at the University are it. All Hilo

Good luck in your search.

If you do find some resource in Puna, please post.

I drove past Spencers and just kept going. With the lack of parking and the people working out on display it was 2 too many strikes for me.

Dayna, the best (and newest equipment, cafe & such...) gym on the east side is at UH-Hilo, unfortunately you must be a UH-Hilo student, or faculty/staff HCC or other UH students for Aloha pass - if you would like to check it out, contact me... added photo link:

some do like BJ Penn on Kinoole, a friend of ours goes to Crossfit in Kona & Hilo - at 11 & 19, there is also a Curves on Aupuni

There is a good public pool in Pahoa with water aerobics 3X a week, link to all of the Park & Rec Pool programs:

I had a membership at BJ Penn for a short while and I liked it...low key and no posers. Nice. It's really too far from my home and so it wasn't good location-wise.

I have friends that go to Aloha and that's more like a Gold's Gym...also nice for workouts...no make-up kine ladies doing squat-thrusts in tiny clothing.

Sounds like a small gym in PUNA would be a good business venture investment for someone. I always liked Family Fitness & Figure Centers while living in the PNW.

Good point. I've often wondered if some sort of gym co-operative might work in Puna. A work out facility funded, owed and supported by its members. Could be something as simple of mutual usage of members' equipment along with contributed items, a space and basic facilities. With additional members contributing, the more - and better - equipment obtained.

Doesn't have to be anything fancy to begin with.

Those of us who are tired of the drive into Hilo are attempting to conceptualize and, perhaps, initiate a co-op.

Do you guys thing there is sufficient interest out there?

There's another Curves located in Shipman Business Park. Never been there but a friend goes there regularly.

Curves for Women Puna / Keaau, 16-179 Melekahiwa Street, Phone: 808-982-3840

Yes, I think there's interest in a Puna Gym. Our population is almost as much as Hilo & they have several gyms. A co-op is a great idea. I'll support it. When I lived in Kau - Na'alehu I thought about opening a gym & posted sign up sheets. There were many interested & willing to commit. Maybe post ads on Craig's list, Pahoa bulletin boards & PunaWeb. See what people say. There is a small room w/ old equipment behind Sukothai restaurant, but I've never seen anyone there. Maybe getting that equipment is an option.

I'd be all for a co-op. I'm not into curves, I don't like to circut train.
